What is a fair salary for a Nurse Manager?
I've given some though to this idea and all I can come up with is that they simply don't care enough to make their current employees want to stay. It sounds like an oxymoron, but I think they know they have the upper hand when it comes to employment, and that a lot of the people who could potentially leave, can't afford to do it, so they stay. This is just my two cents, though.
The problem is they take advantage of our compassion to serve our patients. Rarely do nurses /healthcare workers strike because they fear for the safety of there patients. They treat there employees like crap because they know they can its that simple.
Yes ! I quit my staff job to be a traveler best decision flexibility and excellent pay rate i understand the agency makes money off the top but its worth it to me i will never be staff again
I know of some people who received bonuses and still leave. In these cases the bonus is a bandaid. It doesn't get someone the support they need or the salary they deserve.
That being said I think companies need to evaluate salaries and bonuses that are being given to new hires while loyal employees are paid less, doing more.
I’m with you. Our management refuses to accept that pay is the problem even though those who leave explicitly state that pay is definitely the problem. And then management will continue to hire in masses. I don’t understand either.
Because re hiring someone else at the same or lesser rate is cheaper than paying them a higher salary to stay on
I think it’s true hospitals take into consideration not their people or souls behind the nurse but they just simple care that there’s a nurse there… they don’t care how passionate people are they come a fine a dozen and they figure we will settle because it’s easier.
So my director has been out for a couple of weeks for a voluntary family engagement. It was assumed but never discussed with me that I would take on the directors responsibilities and my own as well. Naturally I would've hoped that there was some extra compensation, acknowledgement, gratitude for this. So I email my higher up to ask about this and all I got was that it has always been the expectation that nursing covers when the ED is gone. Never once had I known or been made aware that it was my responsibility. Am I wrong for hoping for something when I'm given more responsibility when I never even asked for it???
Walking away from this job has never been easier...........
Some hospitals do offer retention bonuses, but they are typically negotiated by your union. In WA state virtually all healthcare workers are unionized.
My employer didn’t start to take staffing seriously until they were spending millions of dollars a month on travelers. They asked us to come back to the bargaining table to negotiate wage increases.
If you’re not unionized already, you really need to be.
Phew I wish I knew!! Paying people low wages that have been in my OR for 5+ years..but we can offer a 25k(?!) bonus to new hires? Ugh.
And they still mostly staff with travelers. Instead of addressing the actual issues why staff are leaving.
