How have your students changed this school year (compared to pre-pandemic)?

I’ve noticed that my students are EXTREMELY quiet this year. In almost every class you can hear a pin drop. I teach underclassmen high schoolers so I find it extremely odd. When I try to get them talking to me or even each other, I am met with quiet stares. I feel like they lost the ability to socialize with others and it’s the equivalent of having their cameras off but in person.

Can anyone else relate?

2 years ago, mentioned to parent about how her kid identified as trans. Because hey-parent should know. School social worker quickly schooled me why it’s NYC policy to NOT do that. It made perfect sense after she explained it. (Cont in comments)

Do you think it looks bad if the principal gives all positive observations for his/her teachers? I think they have to give a negative one to a teacher even though the teachers are all doing their job. This year that one was me.

Remember when having the lesson agenda and homework on your board in your classroom was enough?! Now we have to have it there and on our websites and on our Google calendars and on Schoology.. I spend more time posting lessons than creating them.

The only thing that would convince me to join a union was if I was deeply and strongly attacked in any way at work, and needed legal help bad. What about you?

I am looking for ideas on how to get my students to give back to the community in small ways. I teach 3-5 year olds in deaf ed. I want us as a class to give back in a way that is appropriate for them.
