With how bad the market has been recently, does it still make sense to max out 401k? or would you recommend scaling back contribution percentage?

Buying low, in a tax advantaged account, and holding for long term? Seems solid to me

Actually makes more sense now than it did 6 months ago. 🙂

Well don’t your firms money on the table. Then do what gives you the best advantage with your taxes.

Why wouldn’t you max it out and invest in something extremely low risk then buy at low?

I’m a new associate to a T&E group, partner goes away on vacation and leaves me with a 706 to review and sign. The family is very wealthy. Decedent married for 60 years. Partner says it’s “just a DSUE election, decedent was ill for years, no assets.” Provides no records. Not even an admission the decedent owned a toothbrush. So I looked up the decedent’s home - it’s a joint asset. Partner was “surprised”, and still insists “no other assets”. I found file references to art and antiques.

He sold his house before being approved for the new one he put in for (against my advice). I know he won’t understand and will take this personally, and the family will probably take his side. Recently promoted. Managing 4 direct reports, which essentially means I’m managing an entire department (it’s small company). Offered a 10% increase, which according to my research is low. Also know for a fact that 2 peers were offered 15% right off the bat, even though I’m technically more senior than they are. Live in NYC, 8 years of experience at the company and in total (first job out of college). I’m being told that there is no chance of negotiating further. Am I being taken advantage of?
