It's crazy out here. I'm planning on trying to conceive next year anyway because I'll be 35 so my fertile window is closing, especially if we end up to deciding to have a second. I'd love to have more money saved but we have enough to make it work, plus both our jobs have paid parental leave and work from home options. That said, I don't question anyone's decision not to have kids for any reason.
I second this. Paid Parental leaves, side gigs before pregnancy, building an emergency fund, building a pregnancy fund…anything that can help. Assessing your personal situation, what you want and how to reach it, is useful.
It’ll be just cats for meeee 🙃
Love that!
It’s insane, but you can do it! My husband and I always lived way below our means, even in questionable neighborhoods when we were single, but we saved a nice cushion so don’t worry about layoffs. Now, we have a kid in daycare full time. Our housing is a little cramped, but otherwise we don’t make big sacrifices. We still save a little bit every month and contribute to our kid’s education. Well, kind of a big caveat, my husband is also an attorney and he makes market, and we both graduated with very little debt. So obviously it’s easier for us than others. That being said, you just figure it out. Our cleaning lady is divorced with 3 kids, and she somehow figured out a way to make it work.
The best we can do is attempt to adapt. Optimize what we have, change our spending, reduce our spending, find strategies.
Since my rent is high, I amortize by working remote, which also cuts on commuting expenses and meals outside. Yes, my remote work is not strictly a lawyer job and I earn a little less, but I spend so much less money and my health is so much better than I actually earn more per hour. And I don’t need to do overtime. So I started to save for baby and when the job market is back up, and the pandemic down, I can look into higher paying jobs. The inflation is going to go down at one point, it won’t be high like that forever.
I was thinking like you for most of my life, but then realized: the situation was not great during the Great Recession (1930’s); or after the war in Europe (with rationed food and items); people adapted and so can we, at least a little.
I feel this. Just laid off for “low hours” after returning from maternity leave so even when you think you can handle/afford it all, there’s a chance the rug gets ripped out from under you.
That’s so insane!!
