With the lateral market as hot as it is, are any firms hiring for reduced hours associates? Do you think they’d still offer any sign on incentives? I figure it’s better to have an extra body doing 1600 (80%) than nobody, right?

Yes, it’s happening at my V30. Ask and you shall receive.

Definitely. I would take a well-qualified reduced hours associate in a heartbeat, but I was reduced hours for 8 years so totally get it.

likeuplifting

It’s a trap.

like

It was a trap for me. Reduced pay but same real responsiveness/hours requirements, despite what the agreement said. I did get true-upped if I exceeded my hours, but it was done in a predictably firm-friendly structure that shifted all risk onto me. I suspect it is highly YMMV based on the reasonableness of the partners you work for.

like

Most part time arrangements let associates earn up to full time associate pay if they exceed their hours (e.g., if you are contracted for 1600 hours but hit 1800, they’ll pay you 90% of full pay, not 80%). A full time associate who gets paid for 2000 hours but bills 2400? The extra 400 hours are pure profit for the firm. So there is a strong incentive to overwork full time employees rather than hire a part timer to cover the overage.

likehelpful

OP, I switched to flex as a 4th year associate.

like

Every firm that I’ve seen do this it puts you on a non-partner track, so if that’s what you want, just keep that in mind. I’ve never seen a non-partner track attorney become partner track

like

Same. I’ve been on a reduced schedule almost the entire time I’ve been at my firm and am definitely on partner track.

Currently in the US but interviewing for a UK-based firm and role. The comp level they are throwing around is £250k TC. Is this reasonable for a Director-level role with 12 YOE? My comparator would be wait 18-24mo to become a consulting partner - in the US that starts at $450k/£325k. For the purposes of this question, assume I’m optimizing for initial comp, not long term potential, and not livability, Intl experience, WLB, CoL etc. Thanks!
