In my last school a special ed student took a gun from an officer’s holster twice. I think drastically increasing the number of weapons children can access is horrifying. Not to mention the responsibility of monitoring and properly using or choosing NOT to use one. Even officers make bad judgement calls from time to time out of fear, stereotype, or simply having no time to think a decision through. I would rather be in danger than endanger someone else and be responsible for the outcome.
Really bad idea. hands up ,be honest how many times has a kid pushed every one of your buttons or been verbally or physically aggressive and you have had to sit on your hands or bite down hard on your tongue or step outside and breathe ? Obviously an armed teacher will be required to have gun safe in the classroom and annual trainings. God help the teacher who has a gun taken by a student.
No thanks. I didnt become a teacher so I could ALSO become a cop! I'm already 5 other professions in the classroom, so I dont need to pack a gun too!! We have a police officer on campus that I'm very thankful for....
I always wonder why teachers aren’t treated with the respect veterans are. Military serve for 3-5 years and it’s “thank you for your service”, etc. But teachers get disrespected but we do the work for 20-30 years! So arming us… now we’ll be respected like veterans, right? Because we’ll actually BE vets then. (My anger comes out as sarcasm… but you get what I mean.)
I 100% believe that… but even as a performance teachers are disrespected while out in the open veterans are revered- even if it is lip service.
They don’t even have money to provide proper supplies for our classrooms. Where are they going to get funds to arm and properly train every teacher to use a gun to protect students? It’s not even realistic. I can’t even get hand sanitizer for my classroom.
Good point.
As a teacher that also does security, placing weapons in the hands of teachers will take much more than just giving them weapons. I don’t know about you, but I have come across teachers who have lost their calm in the classroom. Imagine with a weapon in hand? Many factors played into this painful incident, and many solutions will be thrown out there. But arming teachers would not be wise, and it will take training. Half of teachers didn’t even want to sit through Google trainings rolling their eyes and complaining. I know some schools have armed security which usually are retired officers or military, or have gone through an armed security training. Tight security measures have to be taken, including our nation’s. But as these events occur let’s pray 🙏🏻 for our nation.
Sure. Double my pay and then send me for an eight week course over the summer. Also, cover my class once a week to attend security meetings with the other teachers who will be carrying. I would need to know exactly who else has a weapon, or we might end up in a shootout with each other. Also, I would need paid time at the range to prove I'm a good shot, otherwise I'd be a liability.
But they won't pay for me to go to a dislexia training, and that is something relevant every day....
When the Texas teacher job description says “other duties as assigned “ you may want to clarify..
Would not help if teachers are armed. A teacher with a hand gun against body armor and semiautomatic weapons? Why do you think all those police officers hesitated.
Absolute lunacy for several reasons.
1) As mentioned above, they can’t adequately supply classrooms now. Where are they going to get money for guns, ammo, gun safety courses, tactical training courses, gun safes, gun locks, holsters, etc.
2) Related to the first reason, are they providing gun safes or are they supposed to be on the teacher’s person at all times? So as I wander around helping kids with math, I’m also going to have to spend part of my mental faculties making sure no one is close enough to make a grab for my holster? Give me a break!
3) One of my uncles, a far right gun advocate, has two categories for guns, and here I quote: “There are two types of guns - those that have discharged accidentally and those that have not yet discharged accidentally.” Wasn’t there a secondary teacher in Utah that accidentally shot a toilet in the faculty lounge a few years ago?
4) Who is in charge of my class while I engage the shooter? Do I have time to pause, pick a responsible 15 year old, give them a list of codes they might here on the intercom and what they mean, pass on my first aid training and go over a quick inventory of our supplies, take them through the contents of our lockdown bucket, run through the procedures for clearing the building room by room, and explain when it’s safe to open the door? And then I go engage the shooter? Field promotions are not always successful.
5) Is there a bump in hazard pay? Or is this just one more impossible task to add to the camel’s back? That back is going to crack some day. Do we really want to give the camel a gun?
I’d be so afraid with a gun in the classroom. My kids get in to enough already when I’m working one-on-one with another student. I watch them like a hawk and they still find ways to get into mischief. That’s just kids. I don’t want to have to worry about a weapon in the classroom with kids present, even if it is locked away.
Crazy.
No thanks. If it's come to this point let's go back to virtual. I shouldn't have to walk around armed as an educator. All this money the schools received, we should be able to bullet proof any entrances from the outside. Use metal detectors and hire security for each school.
