With this recent heavy metals report, any other moms out there feeling like a terrible parent for buying all the wrong foods and products, and taking whatever shortcuts you can just to get by day-to-day? The mom guilt is STRONG in me today 😥

Feeding your child is NOT a shortcut. Do not feel guilt if you are taking care of your child. Also, these reports are a little insane. Most of these heavy metals are naturally occurring in foods bc the foods absorb the metals from the ground. If you grew it yourself, harvested it, and turned it into pouches, it’s likely you’d have the same heavy metal results if you tested. The real issue IMO is rice and infant cereal and I think that generally pediatricians are telling parents not to use that anyway. Feeding your kid fruits and vegetables is NOT neglect, please don’t feel guilty. Use this knowledge, feed a diversity of foods, and lets everyone move on. It was a very political study and it wasn’t the first one either

I read the report when it came out awhile back - I think over the summer. The problem is, the metals are in the soil and even if you were to buy fruits/veggies and make food on your own, it would do little to prevent it. Maybe if you grew all your own vegetables, but short of that, you can’t avoid it! It’s crazy, but nothing you should feel guilty about. This is a much larger problem.

Ok when my youngest was a baby, I used to worry about EVRRY little thing he ate, read all the articles on heavy metals and dirty dozen. I made him homemade veggie pouches, smoothies, fruit popsicles, all of it. At one time, I was even convinced I was going to start making him homemade formula (I did the research on how bad formula is and unfortunately we had issues with breastfeeding). Fast forward to now: he’s 7. I also have a 4 yo. I’m lucky if they eat anything other than toast, French fries, and PBJ sandwiches. I’ve spent years beating myself up about what to feed them but in the end, I’m doing my best. They grow little minds of their own and poof there goes the balanced meals. Do your best, take these articles as general advice, but don’t beat yourself up over it. Just the fact that you care that much, trust me, you’re already doing better than most.

Hi OP, I was feeling this way but I follow babyledweaning on IG and she said it’s kind of a bit of an over alarm. Rice, sweet potato, and the such have high levels of heavy metals because of what is sprayed and the way they grow/ are treated. I’m paraphrasing but I’d check her out! Anyway she also said to remember that any food is better than no food which is a good reminder! Being a parent is hard!

like

I do but I don’t. Like articles I’ve read said, you can’t feel guilty because let’s say you did make your own food, it doesn’t mean the carrots or peas or whatever you made was more healthy. Yes there might have been less preservatives, but there also would be the same metals in the water or soil.

like

From a blog - skip the rice-based food - carrots and sweet potatoes are fine, but vary the veggies to include others too - skip juice

Nope. Don’t feel guilty at all. I did the best I could with the information and resources I had available at the time. My kid is happy and, in my opinion, healthy. There’s too much other stuff to worry about than something about the past that I can’t change.

YES. My daughter basically lived on those until she was at least 2.5. Fingers crossed it didn’t cause any serious damage.

I have so much mom guilt sending my baby to daycare. She’s 6 months old. Advice needed-I’m 30 weeks pregnant and constantly getting dumped on at work (in industry now). I’m high risk (gestational diabetes & hypertension) and have been clear with my all male management team that I’m high risk. Still, they are steady trying to pull me into new projects while I’m actively leading one of the most high profile projects in the org. From a career standpoint, I appreciate it, but I cannot physically keep up the way I used to and feel like I’m risking my and my baby’s health.

Me: This project has a complex technical facet that will need a week or two of PT attention from one of the experienced seniors who has worked on this client before, because it has a lot of business context Partner: Here's a fresh staff with absolutely no background on that specific technical topic and also very little functioning business sense. You get him FT tho! So same same.
