With WFH indefinite, now considering relocating outside New York State, but will earn income from an NYC based company. Will I still be subject New York City income tax?

If you change your address to outside NYC, you will not be subject to NYC income tax. You will still be subject to NYS income tax. (Source: tax preparer residing in NYS suburbs)

like

Nope, the NYC tax is for residents only

like

Op - I thought you said outside NYC. you’ll still be paying NYS taxes even if you live outside the state

Why not just relocate to another country if location no longer matters?

like

Currently, travel issues. Later, maybe - the earnings abroad tax issues I'm not even going to try thinking about yet.

New York has a convenience of the employer rule for income tax withholding. Not sure about NYC though.

like

Yeah, I'm wondering about that convenience vs necessity, especially now we're told to WFH.

I wouldn’t count Deblasio out, he will try to find some to tax it just like Coumo swept up all the healthcare workers that volunteered to help out.

You still get hit with some N.Y. taxes regardless of where you move. You pay taxes in the state which your reside and the state where you earned money in, no different than gambling taxes etc

I have worked remotely, in another state, for a NYC-based company for 4 years. The answer is no, you don’t pay any NYS or NYC taxes. I pay state, city, and school taxes in the place I live only.

like

A few differing answers on this. Maybe an example move helps: As of 2020, Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming—levy no personal income tax. New Hampshire and Tennessee don’t tax wages. So, if I live all tax year in Alaska (😶) but earn from an NYC based company. Don't visit NY State or City. I won't pay the city 4% + State 7% tax? That's very tempting (except Alaska).

Hey, I answered this above. No, you won’t. I lived in one of those no-tax states you mention for 3 years and only paid federal. Now I live in a state with state/city tax again (ugh) and I pay them only in my state/city, not NYS or NYC. It’s not that complicated. We’ve always had our taxes done by professionals so I know it’s accurate.

Any advice for those really struggling with motivation and tiredness? I’m split across three modules and feel constantly tired and unproductive. With WFH I’ve got into a bad habit of taking naps during the day, and trying to cram the work in the evening, which is somewhat okay for getting through the day-to-day, but I feel like it will all come crashing down soon, plus it leaves no time to do anything I enjoy.

I am part of the inaugural committee of my firm’s Asian network and we are brainstorming ideas for our launch event which ideally caters for all types of Asians (including East Asians, Southeast Asians and South Asians) and is also WFH friendly. So far we have thought of using tea tasting (which can be done remotely as well if the leaves are posted). Does anyone have any other more engaging ideas?

Anyone else experiencing strain in your relationships being at home all day with your significant other? I usually did well separating work things stress, priorities etc… when I was traveling. Literally able to leave it behind at the office and take my commute home either flying or otherwise as my time to myself to decompress so ready to take on family life when I got home. But with WFH I find myself struggling with this as stress is bleeding in with how I interact at home.

My firm is having everyone start back to work in the office. WFH has been so great, don’t get why it has to end now.

I’m working in-house…no timesheets, title I asked for, good salary (6 figures), remote, pretty much done at 5p. No, the work isn’t riveting, but that’s what side projects are for! Stick it out until I get restless, but nice to stop hustling so hard. (Accepting that I may never get a Lion.)

Question for sisters from a brother: when married or if you’re already married, do you plan to contribute financially for big things like mortgage? I’d never ask my future wife to contribute but if she worked and made a good salary I’d appreciate a more equal approach when it comes to paying off our house. This is only for the peace of mind it would give us. Also wouldn’t make sense if my wife was in a time consuming high stress career but not contributing in the home or financially. Make sense?
