I have seen that happening frequently, and has happened to me many times....I empathize with you and understand how frustrating that it. The way I have been approaching this, is every time that happens, i find a way to get back in the conversation or add something like “ thanks Xx, and as I shared before in the presentation/as I said before, i think going this way and doing (new contribution/or whatever else i want to add) is a good way to proceed”. This person has started to notice and has corrected her ways. IS ANNOYING AF - but you have to stand up for yourself!!! because unfortunately, as I have found out, no one else is going to do it for you. Xx
This is really helpful, I appreciate the tactical advice. It really HAS blown my mind that the women who are credited for what I say in a presentation or call stay silent. Even if they’re 3+ levels above me, they don’t correct this person or somehow reinsert my name as a, “yes that was a great point by ___.” Again, grateful for the practical tips and the affirmation 🙏
Put your name on your work. It’s a bit of a power move, but I’ve seen it used to great effect. A subtle “prepared by X” in the corner of a slide. No one dares remove it.
Get an ally. Find someone who you trust and confide in them, so they stand up for you. I’m so sorry. I’m a WW and have seen other WW doing this... I always try to stand up for whoever is being shit on if they are not in a position of power after examining my privilege.
I appreciate that. I mentioned it to one of my VPs but they only witnessed one instance (of many) and sort of dismissed it. If anything, I appreciate the affirmation that I’m not reading into or dwelling on it
Are these contributions that you’re not getting an opportunity to deliver or present visibly, yourself? Could you frame it as asking for more opportunities to directly present?
Hi — no these are points I’ve voiced over whether as I present a deck or brief to the broader team or chime in with a prompt, build, etc. I legit feel she doesn’t see/hear me
I experience this ALL THE TIME. It’s exhausting. Sometimes I literally just finish saying something and the Group director attributes my adds to anyone else from the team. Sometimes EVEN a man!!
I’m relieved but also disappointed that I’m not alone in this 😔
At the same time, the strategist in me is intrigued.. what’s the psychology behind this? What is it these folks need to un/learn to STOP doing this? Would love to just better understand 🤔🙄
