Just got an in house offer annnnnnd
How the hell is it still Monday?
Honestly both of those have really nice exit options from what I understand...obviously corporate is more generalist and tech transfers will have you doing....tech transfers.
Tech trans is in very high demand everywhere. M&A has fewer opps than general corporate or securities work--it's more specialized. Talk with older associates in your group about where departed associates ended up when they left. Say you not looking to leave but you simply want to know where the associates who didn't make partner ended up.
Seconded. You can go inhouse after two years but you'll be doing commercial contracts. M&A can get you into more corporate development which is slightly more interesting work.
Any competent M&A attorney is generally well-versed enough in general corporate to go in house doing that. In many ways, general corporate in house work is much easier than doing M&A, but experience in M&A is also valued to some degree -- you just won't be doing M&A deals on a regular unless you're with P/E or the sort.
Also, I think most attorneys sell themselves short. Your practice area is only somewhat important when looking to go in house since those roles are generalist by nature. The soft skills, like knowing how to be a business partner vs. a useless legal knowledge reservoir, are much more important than any one practice area.
