The reality is that "discretionary" is really code for a compensation system entirely based on preference, not performance, at K&L Gates. Logic, merit, transparency, and consistency have no place in their decision-making, breeding distrust and apathy among all ranks.
Bonuses vary just like comp, and I understand it varies across offices. The calculation is based on your bonus hours but I’m not sure what other factors apply. From what I’ve heard anecdotally, juniors associates tend to receive smaller bonuses than mid-years or seniors regardless of bonus hour count.
You should know your bonus soon though as part of your compensation change for the year.
