Wondering if it’s just my v20 firm but it is so annoying when you have to work for incompetent partners that do not have the capability or stamina to do the work, but have one client or bring in one large matter every couple years. I don’t know how the client likes them since they don’t do any of the legal work.

It happens in small law too. I recently left small law. I brought in lots of clients, and the boss would take the credit for it but had no idea how to do my niche practice area. He’d come to me 10 minutes before the client meeting and ask me how to do this area of law and what he should look for and what he should ask the client. Then he’d confidently tell the client that his strategy was X because the law said Y as though he knew what he was saying. I’d just sit there silently during those meetings letting him take all the credit. Client would ask questions. I’d see boss give me a side eye as he didn’t know the answer, but didn’t want the client to realize he didn’t know by letting me jump in. My job was to manage up, and I’d say to my boss, “I think client means ____ and that he wants to achieve _______ (goal and law that would let client achieve that goal) but you have a lot more experience than me Partner. Would you say that’s the right strategy?” Boss would look gratefully at me. He doesn’t want to be shown up for not knowing what he’s doing and client thinks they’re getting the best representation just because boss who’s been practicing for decades but doesn’t know this niche area of law is the one doing the talking.

I think that’s our job, really as much as it sucks.

I work for a fairly small company. We have had a lot of growth recently. I made a comment that I was not happy with the company culture. The CEO wants to meet. We have a good relationship. My question is…should I send a email with specific examples ahead of time or just keep it as an “on the fly” convo?

I love my job and the people I work with, but there’s one thing that really bothers me: the lack of diversity. Sometimes when I walk into the office and see everyone else around me as the only POC, it feels kind of weird. I don’t think anyone here has ever said anything racist or sexist to me personally, but I don’t feel comfortable talking about these issues with anyone because they might take it personally and then things could get awkward between us.

How does your firm calculate your pay each year? Is there clear quantification of successful marketing/client development efforts, time towards client billing responsibilities, time towards leadership responsibilities, your billed and collected time, and work you delegate to others? If so, how is it broken down? Is it quantified throughout the year to tabulate how you’re doing, so you can forecast a likely year-end amount for yourself? In other words, how is your number baked up each year?

Some good news after almost 11 months of applying and interviews and lots of rejections finally got an offer! In NYC small firm, ex big law folks, no billable hours, niche practice area, appearance of forwarded thinking firm, remote till who knows when, emphasis on pro bono initiatives and building book of business. The catch salary. Was making around 140k at last firm with 1800 billable. Offer is 85k and revist to bump to around 100k in several months after review (plus discretionary bonus)

FWIW I’m 2012 and we are getting crushed with lack of senior people hence more guilt…. Just looking for a little encouragement :)
