I spent 8 years at the same company, left in 2020 and am looking for job number 3 since then. I’ve grown my salary and experience significantly. We’ve just had performance reviews, and it turns out that every junior/mid associate in my practice group (including me) that I have spoken to has individually been told that they’re performing above their level and that they are amazing etc. Is this normal / is this a retention tactic? A number of juniors are considering moving laterally, in case it adds any context, just seems weird to all be told the same thing when it can’t be true for everyone...

Any recommendations for CA bar exam essay subjects flashcards? I already have the Critical Pass cards for the MBE, but I'm having a difficult time finding any for CA specific essay topics.

Can someone explain to me why biglaw firms don’t “review up” and have junior/mid level associates evaluate senior associates? I understand partners have no interest in hearing the minions gripe, but wouldn’t it be valuable to know if your senior associates—seeking to enter your partnership are good managers and not complete a**holes? I’ve had so many projects mismanaged by clueless senior associates lately and it seems like juniors/mid levels bear the brunt of it, but there’s no recourse.

If a firm thinks you’re the right candidate to make an offer to, do they usually continue interviewing anyway? Confused because I had a great interview and think I’m a great fit but the firm is continuing to interview and will make decisions in the next couple weeks. Is that not a good sign?

I’ve gotten asked how I deal with feedback in two different interviews recently. Anyone have an idea of what a good answer would be? I panicked and said something about paying close attention to redlines and proactively attempting to improve my legal writing but I’m not sure that’s what they’re looking for.

1st year/stub in Texas. I was a summer at my firm in both 2019-2020. Thought I preferred litigation, and told the firm that last summer. Had a change of heart, and in April of this year asked the CTO to switch to transactional. However, she said they didn’t have a need for another junior in transactional. Now I’m in lit and hate it. Can I ask to switch again? When would be the best time to do so? Or should/can I lateral as a 1st yr? I like my firm, just don’t want to start my career like this

Scenario: baby coming in January and have an offer to lateral. Current firm gives 12 weeks of parental leave. New firm wants decision by next week. Would like to give a few weeks notice to current firm about leaving but need the entire parental leave. Parental leave can be taken at either firm but importantly, need the full time off and not work at all. What to do and when to do it (ie provide notices etc.). Thanks!

After clerking, my BF recently accepted an offer from and joined a V50 firm (been there a few weeks). Shortly before his start date, he heard back from a V5 firm (one he’s wanted to join for a while) and just got an even better offer. Practice groups at each firm are also different.

The office he joined for the V50 firm is in City A. The office for the V5 firm is in City B (where V50 firm also has an office).

How should he break the news to the V50 firm to minimize reputational risk, etc.?
