Working for Big Oil company (Chevron, Shell, Exxon, etc) is one of the best thing for young people. For following reasons:

You usually live in the middle of nowhere, and live and eat for free. (no expenses, nowhere to spend your money) . Which is very good for saving. Also , you usually fall out of regular social events which is also results in less money spending.

Like you work for oil company for 7-8 years, invest agressively, spend minimum.
And you will thank yourself in your 30s.

I just liked my own post 🤣

I worked in Oil and Oil services for years. I travelled the world and got to work with some great guys from around the world. And it paid well too. Best days of my life.

You pretty much described why it’s not a good job for young people.

😊 I actually agree with OP. I posted on another thread here. Just prison was the first thought that came to mind

I would rather be dead than spend my 20s / early 30s this way.

Pass. Had several friends go to Chevron in middle of nowhere and ended up depressed. One even quit their job and ended up as a dog walker.

You have one life to live. I’d rather die broke and having lived a life than die rich without a life.

I interned in big oil in the middle of nowhere and declined my full time offer for all of the above reasons. I do miss my rent being $500 though…

Lol I love how sarcasm is lost in most people

Not all big oil positions entail living offshore on rigs kind you. Many just playing with excel building ppt just like the rest of us in some corporate hq in Houston for oil & gas energy sector. Worse still, selected few ended up in their commodities trading world of Chicago london New York rat race

To each their own I guess. I spent most of 20’s traveling, partying and saving very little. I’ll prob be working until I’m 55 but worth it for me :).

like

Lol if you can retire by 55 you’ve done well and clearly made up for the lack of saving

Uh are you working for big oil!

Yes

You wouldn’t be a great recruiter but nice effort.

I worked at big oil and really loved it. Although I’d never subject myself to living permanently in midland Texas or some other area like the coast of Louisiana . 3-4 years I could do, 7-8 no way.

My idea is better: just be ugly and work for any other high paying company in metropolitan area with free lunch/dinner in an air conditioned room. No distractions, free food, and AIR CONDITIONING too!

Retiring is overrated. Live your life to the fullest when your hips, knees don’t hurt when you have to take the stairs two floors up!
