The flip side of which team you want to join is which team wants or needs someone like you- with your skill set or qualifications. It could be that those corporate considerations superseded yours and drove the decision in the end. Either way, you still have a right to be frustrated because you had different expectations based on what you were told. Even if this isn’t where you want to be, are there any upsides to this opportunity? Will you be able to gain good experience, build valuable connections, and set yourself up well for the next promotion?
OP - I understand your frustration but try to keep a positive outlook.
Personal story: I worked at a bank for 5 years. Revolving door new manager every year - no big deal since I knew my job. After some successes, I went into my annual review to ask for a promotion, salary increase, greater responsibilities. What I got was a verbal dressing down from my manager and placed on a PIP. I was fired a month later.
Do your best to improve and succeed, but be grateful for what you have. There’s probably opportunity in your new team to do great things if you’re open to seeing it.
be based on our preferences. I pretty clearly stated my preferences, but have been placed on my last-choice team. I perform extremely well, have excellent hard skills, good relationships with the decision makers, and I’ve demonstrated initiative pretty consistently. I’m also one of very few women in my area. Any ideas on why this would happen and how I can learn from this for the future?
I would have a candid conversation with your manager. It’s a tough situation to provide advice for when we don’t know the whole story. Once you speak to the manager, perhaps you can emphasize your interest in the other team and request a switch when possible. Hope it all works out, don’t be discouraged!
