Bain let’s you do a 3-6 month externship as long as it’s not for another consulting firm or a PE shop. We even have a internal database of companies looking for externs if you can’t find something yourself.
We call them secondments and office transfers. They both fall under the broader umbrella of career and mobility.
We offer secondments. I’ve know a few people take advantage of them. Office transfers within the US happen fairly often.
Same at McK. Secondments for 3rd year BAs are very popular. Have seen some unbelievably cool ones
Where?
I assume the company you're externing for pays you, but is it the same comp as you're currently getting? How do things like benefits work? Super cool concept, I think it would be especially helpful for people who have only done consulting their whole careers to get some industry perspective
At Bain, externs stay on the health insurance plan but don't accrue 401k or bonus. I've seen people take 0-15% salary cut for corporate opps (more for the public or social sector), not including foregone benefits. Comp is usually competitive on a per-hour basis though.
