There’s an implicit assumption here that “we” preserve our social status (wealthy enough to hire security, take vacations), and that someone else is the criminal. Interesting, since many folks thought that as the country rounded into 1930. What you pose isn’t the worst case scenario at all... it’s just kind of inconvenient, in a way...

I can do you one better.

The virus mutates and aggressively spreads whilst being fatal for those of puberty age or higher. The disease is termed the "big death" and spreads like wild fire until all adults have perished. The disease dies out and the children are left to raise themselves and tend to the world...or so they thought.

20 years later...society has collapsed and the now grown children struggle to rebuild the world and the technology that has been lost. Unbeknownst to them, a group of government officials and VIPs had been living in an underground bunker to wait out the disease. They intend to take the now rebuilding world by force with plans for world domination. A war ensues. Luckily, a plan is hatched and the last remaining bit of virus is deployed to the secret bunker wiping out the would be hedgemons. All is at peace and God slowly reveals himself to help his children rebuild and prosper.
