Consulting

Worth it to take the CFA Level 2 exam? I have a technical background, enjoyed Level I and have seen consultants use their work experience to get the CFA charter. Looking to exit to start-up / VC / PE

I have the charter. Level 2 is a real bitch. Way harder than level one. And VC/PE doesn’t really value it. Much better for hedge funds/asset management. By the way - VC/PE are extremely different in terms of work and what they look for in a candidate. It’s kind of a rookie move to lump them together.

Eh I’m gonna beg to differ. The hours spent behind studying it, can very well be spent networking to get into those roles. For the time sink the exam is I dont think it’s worth it unless your field requires it or encourages it (research, wealth management, etc)

Heard lvl 1 is a joke compared to the other two. May not be the experience you expect it to be. But won't know until you try

Unless you are going for an activity that has straightforward results attribution to your individual work, like some forms of trading or sales, people will need multiple sources to measure what you can accomplish. Education is one of the most commonly used method for that. Also, if it aligns with what you would like to work it will be easier to complete the certification. It is easier to study something when you are genuinely interested in the topic.

I need some advice. I have an interview coming up Thursday and I’m having a big case of imposter syndrome. I always struggle with this at work, even with 4 years of experience. And it gives me so much anxiety because I feel like I won’t know what I’m talking about and they’ll think I’m unqualified. Unsure how to fight the feeling because it’s all I can think about before the interview :(
