Worth sacrificing half my salary with midsize firm to join a solo in a practice area I’d much rather be in?

Can you afford it with COL, student loans, etc.? If so, then ultimately you need to balance how much the extra money makes you happy vs. how much the new opportunity will make you happy. If you are miserable and can afford to switch, then I say go for it!

like

I wouldn’t do it as a first year...If you want to switch areas try to do so within your firm first — assuming you like the place. You’d be pleasantly surprised. The area you want to do isn’t niche and I wouldn’t go join a solo as a first year just for that reason...I’d jump to another midsize before I did what you’re thinking. My two cents.

like

I would but they are a niche firm that really only does complex PI cases.

It’s impossible to offer much of an opinion without knowing much more information. How willing are you to make 50% less and most likely lower your standard of living?

like

My problem is I can’t get a good picture of how much of it will be in my control. If I knew that I could bring in more work and get back to my current salary within a year I think I would do it just for the freedom to do my own thing. I wanted to post the actual offer to get some feedback but idk if that’s a cool thing to do.

I left a large regional firm to join a solo as a partner (though I was a senior associate). Best decision I’ve ever made. I’m not yet to my prior salary, but I’m much happier.

like

Feel free to message me if you can talk a bit more about the transition!

Only if you REALLY trust the solo to take care of and train you and only if you have a very high risk tolerance.

For context, I’m a first year associate who values autonomy and work/life balance. I currently litigate med mal, which I hate. The offer is in business transactions and estate law.

Life is short. If you can afford it do it 🤷🏼‍♀️other option would be to find a firm willing to pay you more in the practice area you’re more interested in. Don’t know how desperate you are to leave your current firm.

I am almost 2 years into my H1B. They haven’t started my I140 but when I joined told me that I would be eligible in a year of which I am coming up on in this Oct. I got a new offer today but they told me that they would apply I140 after a year from when I join. The pros of the new one is TC more than 18k with sign-on of 15k (not sure clauses for this) and better wrk-life bal). My question is, how long into H1B is it advisable to have an I140 applied for. Would 3-4 years into my H1B be too late?
