If you really need the time off for mental health reasons, including major burnout, that is valid and you should take the time as leave rather than PTO!
Chief
Why do you need to take time off? Lying about it seems immature and risky. Can you communicate like an adult to your manager instead?
It is risky. I will talk to my Senior Manager.

Can you take a different 3 weeks off? Like 3 weeks in March or may? Lying just seems like a bad move….especially about a death in the family
I’ve decided not to take that route. But I can’t take that time off at another date. I want to visit a sibling who I haven’t seen in 2.5 years so I have to figure out what I’ll do.
Nobody is going to ask for a death cert but when people send flowers and cards, you're going to look like a real asshole if they find out later nobody died. If that happens, it's likely a career ending move. And then using bereavement leave instead of PTO will get you into a whole other kind of trouble. Not to mention PTO over 2 weeks requires a different approval.
But, why MUST you take 3 whole weeks? That seems very excessive to be all or nothing about.
I will. Thank you :)
Like the other posters, I think lying is an extremely bad idea in this case. Setting that aside, D’s bereavement time off is max 5 days (typically for immediate family). I think for extended family the norm is more like 3 days.
Why do you need to take the time off? Could you shift scheduling to March or May? If the need is burnout-related, consider medical leave instead.
Agreed. I’m not going to do it.
Do not lie.
Do not cancel your PTO.
Project staffing issues are not yours to solve. If you have accrued the days then you are entitled to them specially with so much advance notice. Put it on peoples calendars as an inform not an ask.
What?
(To be clear I’m not saying it’s valid to lie - but it is valid to take leave for your mental health if that is what’s driving your “need” for the time off)
Yeah I understand. I won’t lie
Just tell them it’s important, you must take the time off.

Request the time off ASAP and it will probably get approved. But do it tomorrow!

Meh. If that’s the only way you could take the time off, do it. You work for Deloitte you’re not saving the world. These companies take themselves too seriously. And my dad did pass away last year
Lol yeah you’re right. I’ll just have a candid conversation with my Senior Manager.
