Would appreciate some perspective: my SO, who I live with, is closely following coronavirus and it’s to a point where he’s asked that we wash our hand every time we get home, ctd:

I always make a beeline for the bathroom to wash my hands when I get home. It’s just normal proper hygiene. That is a reasonable request from him. The hair washing, however, is a bit excessive. Viruses are commonly transferred from something you touch to your eyes/nose/mouth. For a virus to land on your hair, then transfer to your hands, THEN transfer to your eyes/nose/mouth is highly unlikely. Hopefully this will soothe his worry a bit.

I usually wear a hoodie on a flight so I can keep my hair covered and protected from the seat. I roll my suitcase to the garage and grab the packing cubes and dump it all into the wash when I get home shower and change

like

My husband has always had a hand washing, shoes off, wipe down of phones and suitcase exterior when we arrive home, and travel clothes off from when I’ve been traveling which I thought was extreme but I have honestly been sick so much less frequently since we moved in together and I begrudgingly agreed to this, so now I’m on board.

like

One other thing I’ll add is I think this may be an upbringing issue between me and my husband - he was born and raised in a busy urban center, taking public transit, being in crowded places. I grew up in a small town going from my home to my car to a sparsely populated whatever. I realize that I just didn’t know to change my behavior when I moved to a dirty, crowded city - but actually I think that’s the reason I was different

I really hope you wash your hands everytime you get home regardless of where you’ve been.

And disinfect your phones too folks ...💩 is everywhere 👩🏽‍🔬👩🏽‍🔬

Wow. I am apparently extremely gross compared to y’all. I have never once thought about washing my hands when I walk through the door as part of my “coming home routine”. 🙈 Of course I wash them before I eat, after the bathroom, or if they’re physically dirty.

Gross

like

OMG wash your hands! The fact that you weren't already doing this immediately whenever you get home is frankly shocking

I’m with your SO. I always shower and wash my hair after I get off a plane and wash my hands immediately when I get home from anywhere. I live in NYC and there’s just too many germs in general and that’s just good basic hygiene and good way to prevent getting sick!

like

Also people - wipe down your devices! You touch your computer and phone 1000000000x a day so even if you wash your hands regularly, your gross devices could still be an issue.

like

I also wipe down my plane seat, basically everything I touch on the plane including headrest. Someone here suggested a hoodie, that’s not a bad idea.

like

Agree with your SO. Wash hands immediately when you get home, and shower and wash your hair if you’ve been traveling.

like

Just a plug for some patience for your significant other...he may be experiencing some type of elevated OCD due to the news hype around this thing. Asking you to prioritize washing your hair/hands may totally seem annoying after a long day, but the pain of seeing you NOT do that is very real for someone with germ-related OCD.

like

This is not an unreasonable OCD level ask. It's basic hygiene, especially considering that the virus has been spread in planes recently.

like

I would literally never wash my hands "just because" I get home. I also don't go out of my way to wash my hands before eating. I also never get sick.

likefunny

Just because you don’t get sick doesn’t mean it’s not disgusting. All the nasty people who don’t wash their hands after using the toilet probably don’t get sick either, but it doesn’t make it hygienic for them to go prepare food for others to eat or shake your hands. Gross. Why are people so proud about shirking basic hygiene? Weird af.

I do my travel laundry immediately after I get home, and this week he asked if I’d mind showering and when I didn’t wash my hair he asked if I would consider that going forward. Help me out, this is insane right? He’s stocking up on groceries too

like

I think he’s right on expecting you to wash and shower. While I believe there’s no need for stocking up on groceries, people around me are doing that. Costco shelves are bare! It’s a bit crazy. Hoping all of this will pass soon!

like

Lol this is my fiancé. He is doing the same. He thinks I’m not taking it seriously enough, but at the end of the day - I think your SO is concerned for both of your well-beings. We will also stock up on groceries and water too.

OP’s SO FTW!

This sounds extreme to me, too. I am trying to wash my hands more often, but my feelings about germs are usually “bring it on.” Knock on wood, I rarely get sick and I think it’s because I have a naturally good immunity from being exposed to lots of weird stuff over many years. I do get a flu shot, though. And I was not pre-med, so someone with an actual medical background might tell me that my logic is completely faulty.

😂 I mean this sounds extreme to me. I dont wash my hair that often😂

To all, alas my SO was right to be concerned and vigilant. We’ve talked about it we’ve both apologized and learned from it - we both needed to seek to better understand than be understood during a very confusing time!

Get that man a bubble lol hes obsessing and the beeline to wash hands when u get home has me cracking up

My SO is a physician and I make him strip at the door and wash his hands in the laundry room before he’s allowed in the home even pre-Corona. The virus gets in your hair (facial hair, head hair). Healthcare workers who work with sick populations have shaved beards and women their hair to prevent transmission. The least people can do is wash their hands!

like

Yes this exactly!!!

Listening to y’all’s routine hygienic practices is shedding more light on why a specific demographic is not being impacted by this virus...

Dont blame SO at all. I'm like that Corona or not and now its elevated even more.

Washing hands as soon as you get home and washing your hair after a flight seems to me bare minimum hygiene. I also ask people to take their shoes off at my place.
