Would being an assistant attorney general help with future employment? What kind of jobs do AAGs get?

Not a recruiter but I work for a state agency and had interned at the my state’s AGs office and I’ll say that I think it can vary by the practice area. I’m in enviro law and the Deputy AGs in my state who do enviro law are basically experts in the field so they have a lot of opportunities. I have heard the consumer affairs group was really great for future employment too. But if you can get trial and appellate experience in really high profile cases in that area then that’s huge.

Answer really is: “it depends.” If the responsibilities correspond to responsibilities at other opportunities, then it will help getting those jobs. If the job gives you a chance to impress people who have hiring responsibilities, it will help future employment. If your responsibility level is below your experience level or you’re doing something really narrow that doesn’t translate outside your job or your opposing counsel is a bunch of solo practitioners helping fly-by-night operators, it probably won’t.

Thanks for sharing. I’m deciding between a job offer at a human rights commission (which pays significantly more) or staying at my states AGO. I feel that being an AAG will open more doors in the future but I could use a higher salary. I will likely stay since I will get more experience working in diverse and interesting matters (in civil rights) but I’m not sure what is best for future opportunities.

How to deal with overdramatic indian parents? My parents get upset very easily over small things especially when it involves my wife. Btw, she genuinely respects them. I tried talking, but it's hard to convince them to see the brighter side of things. How to deal with this situation? Shall I speak to my wife or stay out it?
