If you still have good time remaining on your F1, consular isn’t a bad idea as you can start your H1 whenever you intend (by going back to home country and get the VISA stamped) unlike Change of Status which automatically happens on Oct1
Yes i recently applied for my STEM OPT which would be valid until 2022.
So incase i get laid off in october, i can still preserve my stem opt status and get advantage of 150 unemployment days
And ofc save some taxes :-)
Consular processing has multiple benefits. 1) you can activate your H1B whenever, and can still leave/re-enter the country with your F1 OPT until it expires, even after you get your H1 stamp (I did this recently). 2) USCIS cannot use your OPT history as a reason to issue RFE/denial - it’s is just way easier than responding to an RFE, regardless of whether your F1/OPT history is problematic or not. 3) maximize your F1 tax benefits - you don’t pay FICA as an F1 even after 5 years as long as you file Form 8843, the downside is you have to use itemized deduction rather than standard deduction, but the FICA saving should still outweigh
