Would like additional thoughts. 27M soon to be 28. Moved to Chicago from LA ~3 yrs ago. Debating if it’s worth exploring NYC/BOS or if I should go back west. Reasons for wanting to leave Chi due to culture fit. I find it hard to relate to ppl here of all ethnicities. More so, I find it interesting that I’ve been “discriminated” against by Asian Ams out here bc of my tattoos and “Cali Asians are trashy and ghetto”. I don’t think NYC/BOS will have the same issues but wanted more opinions. Thanks!

I'll say it first. If you want, ON AVERAGE, the least discriminatory asians, you go South. Everytime we have this discussion we have Asian Americans living in the South saying how they've lived here all their lives and had a great time vs coastal Asians saying they would rather die than live in the armpit of America 🤷 Also I think it's extremely strange that people gave you shit for your tattoos. Sorry you had to deal with that.

Can confirm I grew up in the South and love it here

Recently moved to NYC from Toronto (Canada). NYC people have been nicer than I thought.

I grew up on the east coast and am moving to LA for various reasons, but one of them being that I do not feel like I fit in with Asian Americans here. I’ve lived in Boston and DC and am constantly referred to as an ABG and everyone just assumes I’m from CA anyways. I have plenty of Asian friends that are really nice and I don’t feel negatively judged but I know I stick out and I’d just rather not if that makes sense.

Got it, so Boston is a no go in your opinion. Good to know; I’ve only had good times every time I went but then again living vs. playing tourist is completely different. Appreciate your input. Have fun in LA! And lol I’m in the same boat / I’m 100% ABB apparently

I grew up in Boston and am now in Chicago. The Chicago asian community is small but you definitely can find your group. I actually love the asian community in Boston and while Boston/NYC has a smaller asian population, you’ll find your group.

Thanks for the input!

Grew up in Dallas but now in Chicago. Easier to find an asian bubble in Texas and never leave. In Chicago, it's easier to assimilate among the Caucasian population as they seem less insular than in Dallas. On the other hand, I haven't made an Asian friend in Chicago in the 9 years I've been here. 😂 I do miss my Viet bois and ABGs back home

My son is entering Kindergarten and his (great but hamstrung) public school can only offer 60-85 minutes per day for remote learning, 3 days per MONTH in-school. I’m keeping my kid in public school, hoping the curriculums can align and not go crazy. Love and strength to all moms and dads and partners out there. It’s tough - but so are we!
