Having gone through the recruitment process as a uk undergrad (and settling for consulting after rejections), some general pointers: -be sure to understand that it is a significant investment of your time. If you don’t have a UK law degree, you’ll have to go through a Graduate Law Diploma (1 year ish) plus LPC/SQE depending on your firm (firms are supposed to be moving to SQE but not all the firms have adopted it yet). After LPC/ alongside SQE, it takes 2 years for you to qualify as a qualified solicitor. Idk what level you are at the moment, but as a trainee, you’ll be earning 50-60k at best, usually less (in London. Outside of London it would be much less) -try to get your firm to sponsor you for GDL/LPC/SQE (most large firms will do this, although not sure if anything is different due to Covid). You wouldn’t want to be in a place where you pay for all the courses but firms don’t want you. -Magic Circle firms tend to like diversity in the background of their candidates so being a Tech Consultant could work for you. Make sure you sprinkle some of your tech experience in your cover letter. -practice Watson-Glazers Test. Many firms still use it to screen candidates for VS/TC. -think strategically about which firms to apply. You’d want to tailor your application to each firm, which is takes more time than you think. US firms like Kirkland and Latham are sexy and extremely well-paid, but extremely competitive and getting TCs without VS experience would be very difficult.

To be honest, i didn’t really know what I was going into but consulting turned out to be a decent choice (IB sounded too miserable to be honest)! For now, I’m learning a lot of interesting stuff which would (hopefully) be useful for later in my career

Non public accounting professionals, how much PTO do you get? And how hard/easy is it to take? (I.e., need formal approval far in advance, or can you decide last minute to take a couple days off any given week, etc)

I started last October as a junior (moved over after 3 years in B4 accounting). Have worked nearly every day since then except for the occasional Sunday when I decided to blow off work I probably should have been doing. I desperately need a vacation, but have no clue what that even looks like with Covid, WFH, and Biglaw life in general. It also feels super hard to take a break because it seems like no one in my group ever does. Not sure whether I'm posting to gripe or seeking advice...

I took a positive pregnancy test this morning (yay!) after a four-day vacation that involved way more than my fair share of drinking. I’d taken a pregnancy test the day I left for vacation and it was negative. While I am so excited about the positive test, especially after miscarrying several months ago, I can’t help but feel totally guilty and worried I may have affected the baby. Please tell me I’m not the only one who has experienced this and whether my anxiety is warranted!
