It’s been the best move I’ve ever made. A while ago, I didn’t want to go in-house bc I’d be stuck on one brand, but that’s how it usually is at external ad agencies anyway these days.
The good and bad part is working closely with the brand manager.
It’s good because there’s more transparency, trust and understanding which makes the creative process run more smoothly. We’re a new in-house agency and have already been taking work from their AOR simply because we can turn projects around in just a few hours while it would take the AOR 1-2 days.
However, this close relationship with the BM also tends to make them feel like a creative director. They know the brand well, so it’s nice in that regard but then again, they’re not creative.
Overall, the pros of going in-house really outweigh the cons. It’s allowed me to see how inefficiently external agencies are run and realize the future for them is very bleak
Great perspective, thank you!
I run digital strategy and decided to go in the house. Here are my observations... the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.
1. Trust and respect take much longer to gain compared to agency, where are you are assigned to an account.
2. Workload is equal to or worse than agency. Especially because concepts such as resource allocation don’t exist.
3. Far less flexibility with regards to working environment— such as flexible schedules or working from home.
4. Lack of collaboration— people tend to stay at their desk all day as opposed to interacting with each other. Example: dialing into a WebEx meeting when everyone is in the same building.
Hope this helps…
Great insight!
