Covid has really taught me the difference b/w true vs activity friends (who are just people to do activities with). Over covid, I lost touch w/these friends either b/c they drifted away as they still did stuff but I didn’t/got into relationships/moved away. Now, they comment on my IG stories and I’ll ask how they’re doing,etc. but they never ask about me in return. On the other hand, my true friends do but my activity friend list far outnumbers the true. But it’s ok, quality > quantity 🥲🙃

Is it just me, or has a tech boom sucked a large amount of top resources away from consulting, leaving pretty much every firm scrambling for talent? Perhaps coupled with some downsizing during COVID has made this even more material.

My best friend from middle school asked me to be a bridesmaid for her wedding so of course I said yes. I didn’t know her husband (already legally married due to covid but having the ceremony in 2022) very well because they live in a different state but as I’ve gotten to know him more I’ve realized that he is a truly rotten human. Has anyone been in a similar situation and how do you deal with it? I plan on being supportive of her and forcing myself to be nice to him but it’s so hard.

Very frustrated. Why is it that my union keeps pushing for closing school due to covid? shouldn't we be trying to help keep these kids in school? I work in an urban district, and the kids of lower socioeconomic status are being hurt so much more than our suburban neighbors. How is this equitable? So I guess my question is, is your union pushing to close school too, and how are they going about doing it? Is there any pushback or thought of the students at all?

Why are we still lying? I’m listening to NPR this morning and they are talking about vax mandates and how they will hold up in a medical context. I followed the conversation as there are other vaccine mandates in healthcare so this new vaccine may hold. But they lost me when they said the Covid vaccine in hospitals would make the patients safer. That’s a boldface lie. We are seeing people vaxxed and boosted getting Covid and giving it to others. I’m not conservative. I’m vaxxed and boosted.

I’ve recently heard several of my female colleagues comment that they will not be getting the Covid vaccine for fear of its effect on fertility. Is this a common concern? Any one else feel similarly? No judgment either way- just interested to see the differing perspectives on this particular issue.

Junior associate in the bankruptcy team in a big law firm. The team has been stacked with junior associates due to COVID so utilisation is fairly patchy. I know I’m definitely not the worst in the team in terms of utilisation, but still seem to have a few hours free everyday. There’s not even much BD or knowledge work. What’s the best way to spend these free hours? I tend to keep up to date with market developments, read the news etc. Is this acceptable?

I am noticing that McKinsey is increasingly recruiting at non-elite schools (very roughly speaking not top 15 schools). At my old undergrad, 5 years ago the most competitive firm to show up was EY. This year McKinsey took 4 non-internship full hires. Why is McKinsey going “down market” for recruiting? Are elite school kids losing interest in consulting so McK has to cast a wider net? Or is McK seeking a wider pool for other reasons? I advise undergrads on consulting so want to be best informed.
