Would you apply for a federal district court clerkship (not a major market) where you meet and exceed all qualifications except for the top 10% class rank requirement? I graduated in the top 30%. TIA!

Worst case scenario your application just gets thrown in the trash. Possible they have that requirement geared toward the local law schools and if you went to a fancy national school you can skate by. I clerked for a judge in a “lesser” district and I don’t even know where I fell in the class other than I’m fairly confident I wasn’t in the bottom half. Great recommendations and soft connections can go a long way.

Interesting take on the rank. However, I do not come from a fancy famous law school. I ranked top third because I worked full-time for the first 2 years of law school. 🤷🏽‍♀️

What’s the harm in applying?

I'm sorry. These prized positions sure are hard to get. I already got one. Maybe I just need to let this go.

I had the weirdest thing happen to me. The CTO flew down to meet with me and discuss start date, OTE Salary, and even emailed me the benefits guide. He scheduled a meeting with the CEO and said “offer letter to follow.” Three hours before the meeting the CTO called me to tell me they were rescinding everything due to a business decision that they aren’t filling the Solutions Architect role. Does this happen? What should I think of it?

Those who are or have been AUSAs, what sort of letters of recommendation make the most impact on an application (outside of a former AUSA/judge etc..)? My issue is prior to my current firm doesn’t seem to value the AUSA experience, we have no former AUSA’s in my office and only a view in the whole firm nationwide (same goes for clerks), and I was a transactional associate at my first firm so don’t think anything anyone would have to say would be particularly interesting to a hiring panel...

What career path or advice could you recommend knowing what you know now? Should I look into specific certifications? I often worry about not making enough and want live comfortably.

How do you evaluate things like “culture” in a law firm interview? I’m at a mid-size firm and I love small my team (& my low billable hours requirement), but at the firm & department level things have become really toxic. I’m interviewing at some bigger firms, but I’m terrified of landing somewhere with an awful team with 0 WLB. This was my first job out of law school, so I don’t really know how to scope out red flags in an interview. Any recs?

Question about the “no moonlighting” policy at many firms: the policy (at my firm at least) says that you may not accept any other employment without prior approval while working for the firm. My reading is that this would not stop me from starting a small side-hustle business on my own, since I would not be accepting employment elsewhere. Agree/Disagree/other thoughts?

How much do you rely on your para? I’m in my 30s and pretty computer literate, I don’t dictate, I like doing research etc. I know other attorneys that have their paras do all their discovery, all their research, all their motions and I wonder how it’s possible to hit billables if someone else is doing the majority of your work? Seems crazy to me.

Corporate lawyers, do you use an iPad for work? In what ways has it proved most useful or valuable? Would you recommend getting one?

Considering getting an iPad Pro and apple pencil but trying to justify the $1200 sticker price. I markup docs and doing it with a computer mouse is really starting to strain my wrist (even with a wrist rest/vertical mouse) but I'm not sure that alone will be enough to warrant getting one. Are there another uses for the iPad?
