Hi Amazonians. Can you share the work culture in Retail tech team or in Amazon in general. I've received an SDE1 offer. I have other offers from Microsoft and Goldman Sachs as well. I am really confused between Amazon and Microsoft. All the people I've talked to have said to take the Microsoft offer. Please share your thoughts. Thanks.

Plumbers. This is my dream job. People always need plumbers. I can work for myself after some years of apprenticeship. Set my own hours. Take pride in my work and make a tangible difference in my customers’ lives.
Trades that will never be outsourced are great for job security. If I were younger, I’d become a mason. (You need someone on site building a chimney or fixing a foundation.) However, of them all, plumbers and HVAC are most likely to be on call as much as they’re by appointment. And, as someone already mentions, it’s the smelliest of the trades. Electrical work has various levels of certification - you can do everything but the mains and still make great money. And it’s less likely to be emergency work. Best of luck!
Yes, part of me would love that! But, I really value/need flexibility, and I think it’s harder for 9-5’ers to take off during the day. I have young kids and I like being able to leave during the middle of the day to attend events or volunteer at their schools. Or randomly go meet friends for lunch, etc. Of course a dentist can take vacation days for such things, but I’m sure it needs to be scheduled pretty far in advance. I also really like WFH (not every day like we have to now!) but I’d usually WFH once a week or so pre-pandemic.

I agree with CD2. My friend was considering being a dentist, so she became a dental assistant first. She said it was absolutely disgusting.
Not sure that being a dentist has prestige. To me, it doesn’t. Maybe to some it does. What’s prestigious about it? The white coat? Am I wrong to say that in most towns and cities, you’re not going to make more than 150-200k? My stepmom is a dentist too for the record before you come for me.
Retail and most other things that are “jobs,” not careers.
TS1 - same. Totally writing that sentence down for future use.

CVS/Walgreens have worked hard to make it a miserable profession. Guy I know left CVS to work as opioid oversight for some DEA position, that was less stressful.
Yes 100%. Part of my unhappiness with the job is how unpredictable is. I hate busy season and I wish I had a set time to go home everyday. Like with a dentist you aren’t up at 11pm working on a report.

My brother is a nurse. He asked me, “if you’re not paid hourly, how do you know when the work day ends?” 😢 So I’d broadly assume that any job paid hourly allows you to “end” the day.

No because I’d be poor. Almost anything that you don’t have to think about and has a set 9-5, you’ll be making lower salary/hourly rate accordingly. We get compensated for the hassle and stress and hours of our careers. We can complain about it, but coming out of college we make the median salary in the US as 20-22 year olds. It’s all relevant.

“Almost anything” I guess the question is, what are the exceptions?
