You're probably pretty resourceful. I don't think you can survive in consulting (or any professional services) without being resourceful.
Charisma is sometimes helpful but rarely necessary
I think I have made an entire career out of being helpful, charming and clever
Agree with above. I have noticed that superficial leaders that main skill set is charisma and politics generally value that in the people they want in their leadership team - which often weakens the team to a dangerous level. I recently worked with a leader that considered Board Room Presence as a prerequisite to be on her team.
That’s Deloitte and Touche’
Quite a generic thing… the important thing is to bond with clients and bosses, even if you are analytic. A charismatic leader from the US can be considered a pain in the ass in Europe. A charismatic leader from the UK can make Latin-Americans sleep in a presentation…
Tend to agree with SP1, seems unlikely you’ve gotten where you are without being resourceful.
Charisma seems like it would be pretty helpful on the sales/business development side. I guess delivery too, in terms of your executive presence and ability to influence.
Ha… “resourceful” in consulting = absorb a ton of work with no team/budget. No thank you.
Also can be a DEI red flag… “you need to be charismatic” is not always so easy for minorities (people of color/women/etc)
I think it is the opposite. Drawing in a team to get the work done.
Yes
Very few of my peers would qualify as charismatic… (I count myself among that number) resourceful definitely though.
Resourceful is super important. Charisma is in the eye of the beholder. Saying the right bold thing at the right time with the right level of conviction is what sets partners apart. Not sure if that is charisma, smarts, charm, or cleverness.
P2 - You convinced me that you don’t know what charisma is and wouldn’t recognize it if you saw it. 😉
Very much. Being resourceful is teachable but charisma is difficult, either you have or you don’t, some people can just take over the room without much effort.
