Would you ever let your firm/company know that you are looking to leave before you give your two weeks notice? I have some interviews coming up, and already have an offer in hand, so leaving is a foregone conclusion. In your situation I’d be more open to keeping an open dialogue with your boss so as to not blindside them. It doesn’t sound personal and you could make it clear that you want to leave them in the best way possible. But in most situations I’d say don’t give notice until you’re ready to leave.

Business is fluid. Your boss/management should understand that. While they will be sad to see you go, they should move forward and fill the void you leave…bc it’s business. I can appreciate that you want to leave on good terms and be professional, but these people are not your family (right?). Be careful about telling your employer that you are actively looking for a new job irrespective of the reason. The paths for what’s best for you and what is best for your firm will immediately and drastically split the moment you make this known, and even ethics/professionalism will not necessarily lead to decisions in your favor going forward. If it were me, I would wait until I have accepted an offer and cleared conflicts at my new firm then make a personal call to my boss or visit their office with coffees to give them a personal heads up.

If you told them and they wound up having you leave sooner than you planned, would you be okay with that? If not, don’t. Not saying they would definitely do this, but that’s a realistic worst case scenario that you should keep in mind. It’s amazing how quickly a great relationship can go sour.

I was at my first form, a boutique, for 7.5 years, and told them about 4 months in advance of my departure. I was moving across the country to be closer to my family and had gotten a new job. I knew it was a risk, but I also had great relationships with my bosses and wanted to give them as much time as possible to prepare. They appreciated it and I stayed until it was time to move. Offer more time (4 weeks notice). That’s much better than telling your boss you’re leaving without a job lined up. It’s also your job to make sure your cases are lined up for a steady and clean transition to your replacement. Game plans, next steps, and reasonably outlined theories on the cases should be noted in all your files. Do not tell your boss you are leaving before you have another job lined up.

Thank you all for the great advice/personal stories. This has given me a lot to think about before I make this decision. I’ll probably wait a bit longer to give notice, but try for more than two weeks.

This is your life and career. I’d plan out your start date, have all paperwork done for new job, pick up your new laptop, move into your new office and get your affairs in order then and only then do you give your notice.
