Would you get a COVID Vaccine?

Suppose it was mandated by your school and you still had reservations about it.

This is not accurate. The science behind the mRNA techniques are well known and researched. The biggest reason these vaccines haven't been more widely used is because of how unstable the vaccines created using mRNA were until recently. It is disturbing that teachers don't have the critical thinking and ability to research what this is to draw an informed conclusion.

like

The fact that teachers who should be at the top of the educated and intelligent scale would think that vaccines are optional is more bd boggling to me. Learn science and support it.

You do you NJES2. Stay out of others business.

Yes, absolutely I would. If the science and health care professionals recommend it and have studied it then I am all in. The other option is???

Preschool Teacher 4 - do you have children and if so did you get them vaccinated for school or did you take advantage of your state’s vaccine exemptions? You probably have nothing to worry about as most people will take the vaccine. You can survive because of us, no worries!

I honestly do not know. I am a strong believer in science but have had bad reaction to flu vaccine in the past. I will not get a flu vaccine again. I can see how covid would be similar to flu so scared of same bad reaction.

If you had a bad reaction wait and see how it goes with others

I’ve been following this thread closely. The debate seems to boil down to only a few arguments.

The vaccine is not safe or effective vs it passed clinical trials
We want things to return to normal.
Science.
You can’t make me do something I don’t want to do vs the vaccine protects other people (herd immunity.)

Though put through many trials and approved for use, there are still some valid questions about the vaccine’s safety or efficacy. Complications take time to develop, and for all the things we can fast track, time is not one of them. There are some reports that the vaccine’s benefits are short-lived. There are also reports that it doesn’t necessarily protect the individual, but only lessens the severity of the infection. I guess until we get it, we won’t really know. This is really a faith-based argument that doesn’t conclusively support either stance.

EVERYBODY wants things to return to normal (for us, that means kids back in the classroom.) We do not know if that will occur after everyone is vaccinated. In fairness, it appears normalcy will definitely NOT return if nobody gets the vaccine, so at least by getting it you are removing a hurdle. But my take is things will not return to normal for a while, as we wait to see the true effects of inoculation.

Science. You can find sound arguments for whatever you want to do. We pick and choose the narrative we lend credence to. “I will get it because I trust science” is as valid an argument as “I will not get it because I trust science.” My observation is that way more people trust science than understand science. I don’t think claiming science one way or the other is a particularly convincing argument.

The vaccine protects other people. This is the trump card for the pro-vaccine side. It is an argument for the good of the group at the expense of the good of the individual. “It doesn’t matter what your feelings are regarding the virus and its vaccine; if I am concerned you need to take measures to protect me.” (This was the same argument used to enforce mask-wearing.) It is contrary to the principles the nation was founded on, namely individual liberties. I see that issue as the primary divide in our nation right now, both socially and politically. I think there is a great deal going on beneath the surface with this argument, and the debate moves beyond discussion of the virus and into the area of the government’s fundamental role. This is a hot button, and no amount of data or logic will persuade if the ultimate action is contrary to an individual’s feelings in this area.

It’d depend on whether or not my reservations were based on data & science.... or fear, misinformation, disinformation, or just not understanding the science & data.
Best we can do is educate yourselves and make sure our info in coming from reliable sources (and not echo chambers) and ask questions and ask for help if we dont understand something.
I for one will get it.

likesmarthelpful

Do you know of any scientific data that has been released? I would be very interested in the results of trials run, how it was funded, and both failure and success data. This is an important decision and I’d like to make an informed decision.

like

I will be getting it as soon as I am eligible. The only way we will ever get back to somewhat normal is when 60%+of the population has been vaccinated.

likesmart

What I know about it leads me to think I’d take it. However, if my my school mandated it, given their current track of decision making, I’d fight it on principle.

Would you mind sharing the link for the data you've been reading please?

Good Lord, yes! From what I’ve read, it’s a well-tolerated vaccine, and what have you lost if it isn’t perfectly effective? You still get covid but not as severely? Ok.

Yes, Being a teacher puts me at risk because of all the children I come in contact with at school. I am older and need some kind of protection. I need the vaccine before going back to school. There have been way too many deaths!

like

Wow, a lot of science and opinions on both sides. Also on both sides are those who are saying the other side is closed minded with a few down right rude. I think we need to turn back the clock and be civil with our discourse. I will do more research before taking it. But if it becomes mandated, then I won't - just because it is mandated. I don't trust authoritarian rule. If you do, then research history. Do your research on history and on the science. Never follow the crowd unless you know where the crowd is going. And don't take the word of the crowd, often they are just following others and don't really know themselves truly where they are going.

like

Well said!

Interesting question. I don't have a strong opinion one way or the other. I have been pondering this much more than I would have thought I would.

I suppose not. I have never been worried about this virus and I'm still not worried. Getting a vaccine that provides an unknown level of protection against something I have a low chance of getting that likewise has a low chance of a serious side effect does not seem especially important to me.

I find it rather humorous the number of people claiming "Science!" as the conversation-ender regarding whether one should get this vaccine or not. Many don’t provide any scientific justification. They just say, "I trust science! (therefore I will act this way)” with the implication that if you act the other way you are an uneducated fool who doesn’t understand science. I’m not sure the jury is in on what the science says in this particular situation.

like

What are they not telling us? For FDA approval all data has to be shown. And what ingredients are you worried about?

Thought I'd sum things up a bit for those of you who are new to the thread.

If you don't get a vaccine, you don't believe in science and you don't care about other people. If you do get the vaccine, you are an informed, compassionate individual who knows what is best for society.

hahahaha

Why would you have reservations? Do you know more than scientists do?

The question really should have been,”Given a choice, would you trust a government with yours and or your family’s’ life”
Or
Is it fair considering the time in which the vaccine has been rolled out to have a state mandate?

likesmart

It's an mRNA vaccine, which takes a lot less time to develop.

like

I believe in data and science, however, the speed at which this vaccine has been developed is suspect. Most vaccines take a minimum of 10 years before it’s pushed out to the public at large. There’s additional concerns I’ve heard mentioned by doctors but which have no answers such as whether it’s safe for pregnant and/or breastfeeding women, whether it’s safe for young people 16/17 and younger, and one big one is whether the antibodies the person builds from the vaccine will last. With all that to think about I won’t be getting vaccinated.

like

It does not take 10 years to develop a vaccine

like

No I will not be getting it until it has been approved by the FDA which it has not. I will let everyone take it and they can be a trail test and I can find out what the side effects are. Also, it is not mandatory. Usually even in the health care field they make some vaccine mandatory but not this , why? Because it has not been approved and they don’t want to sued so it’s optional. I will wait . I feel if you don’t mind that it was approved for emergency even though the FDA has not approved a vaccine and that’s okay with you then take it. If you are not comfortable to take something that you don’t know all the side effects and you want it to be approved first with more trial test then that is ok as well. Each individual has to make the best choice for themselves and be respected either way.
