Depends on the company and the type of access they request. It’s not all created equal
Some have very limited access (kpmg)
If they expect you to be checking work emails on the go outside of work and are requiring a phone, ask them to buy you a work phone. Plain and simple. Otherwise I would not install Work apps on my personal phone
Right!

Don’t care. I don’t do anything on my phone. What are you doing that’s so secret?

If on an iPhone, before you install the profile on your phone, it will tell you the permissions it requires. Read through those and make a decision yourself. You will likely find that most corporate MDM profiles do not include rights to access application data, just list/install/remove applications. The biggest thing for IT orgs is that they want the ability to erase your phone when you report it lost (or get fired for cause). More often than not, the IT security folks have way better things to do than spy on an employees phone, even if they wanted to.
The bigger question in my mind is if you want to be permanently tethered to your work comms. It’s nice having a second phone to try and truly disconnect when you’re out of the office.

Can you expand on what you mean by “give IT permission to access your personal phone”?
Request a work phone. Simple.
Then answering emails and taking calls outside of work hours is outside of your pay grade.
Since email on phone was invented, companies has said they will need the device management rights to your phone. They pinky promise that their device management doesn’t read personal data.
Now, i see you are an associate so assuming you are new to consulting so I understand your shock. I have a 3 year old and I remember when how her mind was blown when she learned how to flush the toilet. Almost everyone has email on phone, some people have two phones and some have only one.
