No, but there is an exception: if she came from old money (e.g. DuPont, Rockefeller, Disney, Carnegie, etc.), I'd probably be okay hyphenating last names and let the kid choose what they want to do

Don't know about that one chief

As an alpha male, absolutely not.

No, I’m not taking another man’s name (because that’s all her last name really is, if we’re being honest)

A1 got me good 🤣

I propose we both change our last name to a completely new last name

like

Take de cooler name

taking it for the DEI ! 😂

Went to high school with a guy who took his sweetheart’s name in marriage. He’s now married to a different girl we knew, and back to his maiden name.

This story is hilarious. Imagine how much of a torturous type A feminist type his ex-wife would’ve been to force him to use her last name. Imagine all the other sh*t he would have to do for her. One day he said enough. This is what happens, things go back to their natural order so fast :)

Only if her last name was Madickener and my name was Barry

Wow men are so narrow minded

likesmartfunny

Yeah so are women

like

Female here and I wouldn’t even take my ex’s name. I knew I’d a couple who combined their last name to create a new last name and that’s what they did after they got married.

VP1 my dad died when I was very young and it’s the only thing I have from him so unlikely I would take another man’s name in the future. Potential hyphen but I would never get rid of my own.

For the guys saying no but expect the woman to take your last name, what’s the logic there? Is it just sexism? You can be honest, it’s not like we know each other

likefunny

I don’t expect it on the other side. That’s for the couple/individuals to decide.

Usually the reason guys expect it is tradition and a sense that having a single family name helps provide cohesion in the nuclear family unit.

I’d rather be single forever than take a man’s last name

I don't think it's men who need to chill - they're not telling women to change their last names.

We were going to and are still open to the idea - for now we just kept our names. I’m more accepted by her family than my own anyway. I do get a little tingle of excitement when people assume I’m Mr. (Her Lastname), I’m just too lazy to do the paperwork

like

No. She has one of those complicated 15 characters last name that’s difficult to spell and pronounce. Mine is just 2 letters.

Sure, I hate my father so that would work for me 😂

No. No exceptions. People will stop respecting you.

But do you expect your wife to take your last name?

like

I don’t like my last name, so if my future wife has a better one, I would happily take hers. But I would want our last name to be the same regardless.

likefunny

K1 I’m sorry you’re not secure enough to define yourself by something other than that which has been chosen for you. The most significant thing ever produced by my family line was me, so I have no reason to feel any attachment to a name I did not chose.

I would drop the last name to be like a Brazilian soccer player

Never really understood the concept of changing your last name to your husband’s last name once you got married. Make it simple and just keep your own names

like

Edit: autocorrected to a different word should be triumvirate

Fuck no, made it clear she’s taking mine. Otherwise I’ll be single.

likefunny

So fragile.

Lol if you choose your own fathers surname over your husbands surname and then wonder why marriages are so weak and divorces are so high? You are literally spitting on your husbands family and saying you prefer your old household over your new one. Pretty damn sad just to save the patriarchal name of your father lmao

like

It just blows my mind that people think a woman choosing not to change her identity (she’s not necessarily picking her fathers name over her husbands, she’s choosing to keep the name she was given at birth also not every woman has her fathers surname) is the reason why a marriage is a weak. It shouldn’t be default that a woman takes a man’s last name it’s sexist. It should be a conversation—personally my last name is beautiful I’d never change it for anyone because it’s my name and my identity and I’ve built my career with this name. If a man wants to take my last name, that would be great but I wouldn’t expect him to and it’s crazy that men expect women to do so and can’t admit that’s sexist. If uniformity and single family name are so important, you have to be open to changing your last name regardless of gender

Might be unorthodox but why should a woman forego her own last name and keep the man’s? In terms of offspring, women contribute equally if not more so I don’t get why their own last names can’t be passed on. Just a thought

Seriously wanna divorce my wife who’s not necessarily a bad person but I feel angry about her all the time. I always have to fight with her over the small things. I feel she’s playing a power game and trying to take control whenever she gets the chance.

The only moment she steps back and be the person I want is when I get really angry and she can sense it. Why do I have to do this every time to get peace?

No kids, but even I am not afraid to divorce, I don’t feel it’s worth it!

From day 1 I have never felt accepted and have ignored several inappropriate comments made by manger.
