Would you hire me if I told you during an interview that I quit because my firm expected me to evict an old man with COVID from his home? I literally can't do it. I'm wondering if it will end my career in big law as a result. I might decide that's a price worth paying but I'm just curious what others reactions would be? Could I even say that in an interview? Is that privileged info or anything? Any advice is welcome right now

Have you already quit, or are you looking for future options if you need to quit?

One would think there are several internal options to avoid having to quit in the first place.

Reframe to what you're seeking at new firm instead of fixating on why you quit (without being cagey or dodgy). There are plenty of more benign ways to frame why you left.

like

You should find another job before you quit as people tend to want to hire people that already have jobs or somewhere else to go (honestly, I’ve had candidates who people were like “meh” and then the firm across the street offered them and they were like “we need them”). I get you don’t like evicting that old man, but that old man will be evicted one way or another so if you get to evict that person you may be able to control some of the process to give the person more time or be more compassionate. I would not, however, explain to your future employer that was the reason you quit...a simple “the work was not for me” is enough for me.

like

How can you “more compassionately” evict a sick old person from their home?

Agree with what you’re saying about the message to future employer, but that is just not a justification for what is imo a morally repugnant act. You can either cause him to lose his home or you can refuse to.

I think we all have our own lines in biglaw and I respect OP for recognizing theirs.

If you said this in an interview, our interview would be done. Congrats on finding your moral limits and sticking with them, but probably should consider plaintiff-side work if you need to believe in your cause all the time.

Did you quit or are you considering doing so?

Hi! I posted this in the in house bowl, but figured I would post here, too. I’m LGBTQIA+ & an in house attorney in a red state. I am desperately seeking a relocation after a handful of anti-LGBTQIA+ bills have been introduced, & some even signed into law in my state. Despite my efforts, I cannot seem to get a recruiter to work with me or any companies outside my state to even consider me. I’m applying to jobs for which my experience is a match, & I’m being looked over. Any advice on relocation?

Current: Consultant at Economic Consulting firm (~$115K all in) with likely promotion in Spring 2021. Don't love the specific type of consulting I'm doing (niche and not what I want to be doing long term)
Alternative #1: Valuation analyst (so not client facing) at top PE firm. Role would be based in NYC (~$110K all in)
Alternative #2: Consultant for boutique strategy consulting firm (final round this week; research indicates range of $150-190K)

Leaving MBB was the best decision I ever made. I know many view it as a professional pinnacle, but it's not the end-all, be-all it's hyped up to be.

If you haven't been able to make it, try again if you'd like, but don't let MBB define your career. It's not worth it. Plenty of other amazing firms out there.

I know that some other associates at my level are approximately 30% behind other associates in hours on a month to month basis. Yet all of these associates say they are “at capacity”, and myself and another associate still end up being assigned work instead of them. How do we handle this? For reference, all associates are around the firms minimum requirement, it’s just that a few of us are 30+% over and it is leading to burnout.

Mid-level expecting 1st kids (twins) in the next six months. Firm offers approx 3 months of leave in total, which can be taken all at once or split into 3x 1-month, or 1x 2-month & 1x 1-month chunks.

I don't think I want to take it all at once at birth, but I'm a bit worried about having to wind down & back up 3x if I split it into 3 periods throughout the year (idea being that we could do some traveling/visiting fam & be around at dif times of their growth if split 3x).

Thoughts?
