You will see many. People who are becoming M or SC today don't know that those C's probably have more experience than you do. Note that when they graduated few years ago, it was tail end of recession and people chose to go to industry as having a job was important. They lost their golden years when consulting was downsizing. You are too naive and I still feel that MBAs fresh outa school should com as C due to their immaturity. Call yourself lucky and don't think you are smarter because you lead him or her.
To highlight M4’s point regarding the recession ...I was at Columbia grad school in 2009 (non-MBA). I applied for McKinsey and at the first interview (an exam), they gave us a list of all other applicants to practice cases with....there were 100 applicants on that list (from Columbia and NYU). Long story short, I made it through the process to the final round (there were 8 left at that point sent to various offices for the final round interview). I didn’t get an offer. We all kept in touch, and turns out one offer was made. So out of 100 applicants who was given an interview slot, one offer was made.
I didn’t make it into consulting until 2011. My career turned out fine, but it took a couple years detour on the front end.
Anyways, just remember this is a marathon and not a race.
M4 - You make a great point!
Thought it would impact my perception
Thanks for the support. Honestly, I thought I would be ridiculed for the comment.
I would not judge, but it makes me feel insecure, as I shouldn’t be leading them or don’t have the expertise to lead them.
I am judging you now
P4 I agree, that is different. Experience is a big factor in effective coaching.
No wouldn’t judge at all!!
Do you take credit for his or her work?
Never
There is no one path. And two years is not a big deal at all. My team runs old and young in comparison to myself.
Also, from personal experience, some have worked internally at the firm for years in tech support roles and made the move to a consulting position later. They are normally "behind" the promotion curve but actually know how to deliver results instead of just bullshit through things.
This happens all the time, nbd unless you make it a big deal
Lol too much effort goes into judgement - just focus on excellent delivery
No. I have lead 45 and 55 year olds. Gotta get a job done with your resources. That’s it
Nope. SC here, M’s a month younger, still one of those people I respect the most at the firm.
Wanted to add a side note to see what you guys think: while I don’t have any issues reporting to/working under someone younger than me; I was assigned a coach some time back that I was surprised to find out was in their early twenties (early promote I guess). I didn’t think much of it at first but I thought more about it and eventually changed coaches because I felt that someone who had fewer years of working experience than me, and had only been at the firm for a year longer than I did, would be less suitable as a coach for me than someone who with more experience than I have. I’m sure they would make a great coach for someone else, but it just wasn’t for me. Do you think the coaching scenario and the reporting scenario are similar, or sufficiently different?
I suppose when looking for a coach i was looking for someone further along in experience/wisdom/street smarts than I have to be my yoda, whereas respecting authority and being professional in team seems easier to do and age/experience doesn’t seem as important? Curious what others think. Would you take on a coach younger than you with fewer years of working experience than you (but maybe started at the firm earlier than you have )
The analyst reporting to me currently has 21 years on me. Is it weird for him? Maybe. Me, not at all.
I’m a manager, joined the firm at 31 out of MBA, many of the directors I’ve worked with are my age and in some cases younger. I’ve never questioned their authority. Typically people that rise to M and D quickly have both high IQ and EQ. It’s not difficult to recognize their talent and find opportunities to learn from them. Being around the same age +/- 2 years has probably helped me overall.
D7 I’m assuming he is proj delivery (as opposed to a 40-something BTA)?
