Do you what you think is best for you and your well being. If you need to assume a bit lower standard of living due to lower income so be it. The flip side is you will enjoy and be happier doing that other work. Most of us do not enjoy/truly love consulting I don’t think. Just glad it pays our overpriced brunches and lets us save, and have vacation $.

Ive got 3 more years doing this before I buy a couple bodegas or laundromats and operate my own LLC.

Its about two metrics - TC and WLB + the ratio between the two. Essentially, how much effort do i have to put in to get that 🥖? A 50% TC cut is one thing, but does that translate to a big bump in WLB? If the job is truly your dream job does that mean you need to spend less “effort” doing it (i.e., youre more focused and the work is more fulfilling and energizing)? Id think about it that way.

Why do you have such a cheap dream job? 🤨

I'd do it, but only if it were my favorite team unless it was baseball ops (Moneyball type role), then I'd go wherever. The role I saw was on the business ops side. Being removed from the baseball side of things, the benefit to me would be free tickets and sense of team pride. I probably wouldn't enjoy that if it weren't my team.

I would leave consulting to lay on a beach somewhere with dirty martinis and not a care in the world. That’s my dream job.

I'd take a 50% haircut if it was fully remote and closer to 30 hours per week as can be the case in tech. Nothing deadens my soul like going into the office and pretending to care about what Suzie did over the weekend. Would take a 10% haircut to never have to suffer another "water cooler chat" or listen to and smell someone go nuclear in the next stall.

Prob not. 50% is a lot.

So my guess is that you're going from NYC to TX. If that's the case then yes

Yes

Yep. Though like someone above, I’d caution that we often change our minds about our “dream job” after we’ve been working there for a while. I’d still likely take the chance (and am planning to, though in a few years).

Yeah, if it doesn’t work out, you can boomerang back.

Well… is your dream job still in corporate America or will your new gig be something like a concert pianist, a children’s book illustrator or perhaps an archaeologist?

Fair. Since you asked for opinions…Let’s take my music example. I would not leave to go work for Bob in the accounting department of the New York Philharmonic. But I’d leave upon successfully auditioning for a violinist position.

Currently working at Deloitte to save up money and own a farm.. would say that's at least a 50% pay cut for a dream job. Do whatever makes you happy. But for me, I keep in mind that Im young and can use this time to build my corporate career and save money towards what I want in the end

Do people really crowdsource opinions on making important life decisions?

Let me guess OP, which will be unbiased and have zero influence from the crowdsourced reasonability right? Good luck!

No. That's too big a hit. Average post mba consulting salary is like 165k, so a cut to like 80k is a big downgrade in lifestyle, even if the wlb is better.

I’ve only worked on tech transformations for clients in one specific industry throughout my whole career. All projects have been almost the same. How can I set the stage this year to negotiate a lower billable hours expectation instead of a raise? As a woman I'm hesitant to be open about my reason: I want more time at home with my kids. I lateraled to this firm a year ago for WLB and they are indeed flexible on WFH which helps. Salary is a bit below average for mid-size firms like mine in my area, and I didn't get a raise or bonus this year because I didn't hit the billable target (1900). Ideally I'd keep my salary but go to 1600 hours.

I am two months short of completing 2 years of service at the current firm. I got a good offer and looking to move. This means I will have to pay back about $6k in joining bonus. Is there anyway I can negotiate this? I have so much overtime work hours that can currently be tracked to about 500+ hours for this year alone. What are somethings I should be aware of when paying back the joining bonus?

Why does everyone say PE is a “low risk” way to make a lot of money? Once you hit VP level, isn’t the majority of your compensation in carry, which doesn’t get paid out until 5-7 years AFTER it is earned (while in consulting, your bonus is paid out in the year it’s earned)? And if you look at the CALPERS database, don’t many funds of mega fund/UMM PE firms fail to exceed the hurdle rate? So even at established UMM/MF PE firms there’s a possibility you’ll get no carry? Am I missing something?
