I have a unique opportunity where I have investors (from previous industry career) who have approached me to start a digital marketing agency. Their angle on it is they have a portfolio of healthcare, pharma and real estate holdings and they have different agencies servicing each. They were impressed by my previous execution at one of their holdings and haven’t found any agencies who worked how I did. They want to fund me to start a digital agency that would service their holdings and make it into a profit center by using their existing network to refer new clients in their niches. They would be providing me %30 equity, giving me a salary of $225k, where 50k of that buys into the equity granted which would vest over 4 years, so I’d actually only see $175k as my take home pay. They have the goal of selling it in 5ish years. They would be providing me with an operating budget of $750k annually for staff payroll, expenses, etc.
I believe I am capable, but this is uncharted territory and I have a good set up currently.
I’m conflicted because I am 30 and would be taking a gamble leaving my consulting career (making 125k), but learning the art of consulting and being exposed to many different disciplines (and expanding my network). However if I take up this digital agency as a gamble and it works, the pay out would be major and get me massively further in life than staying in consulting would
This is a summary of the situation, there are more specific nuances that I am currently talking through with the investors and am navigating (for example, legally binding/ guarantee funding for 3 years minimum with a lump payment of remaining salary if they get cold feet and want to back out)
Sounds like a no brainer with the Salary they are offering.. like you said if you fail, just return to consulting..
That said, do you think you have the experience to build an agency?
How is Slalom working out for you? Are you getting the experience you are looking for there?
Your other option could be using this contact to sell Slalom services and turn yourself into more of a CSL.
Depends on your personal obligations. Single and renting? Absolutely. Married with kids and a mortgage? No chance.
Single with a mortgage.
Potentially if you literally have a pipeline of closed work. Otherwise I’d proceed with extreme caution.
So far the guaranteed pipeline would would cover about 75% of operating expenses. I would need to land 1 or 2 more clients at the average monthly client revenue figures to break even and then it’s all profit from there (day 1 profit split is part of the deal as well)
