Would you move to a nurse manager position if you were making the same as a staff RN? Any benefits in going into management?

Staff nurse to nurse manager is NOT a lateral move. So you should be negotiating up in the first place. Up enough that makes up for no overtime and differential but still making more. So yes, you should, if you do it right.

I am a nurse manager and I earn at least $50,000 more than the RNs on my team- it is not a lateral move. The job does not end when you leave the building.

It depends on the setting and organization but in general, NO. I love the quality/safety aspect of healthcare administration but in reality it can be a lot heavier in operational and people management. And depending on the setting it’s frequently a lateral pay move, with a lot more responsibility. Also, depending on your leadership, a lot less flexibility.

I can definitely attest to loving the quality and safety aspect of being in leadership, however it can definitely be a lot heavier on the operational and behavior/people management side of things. I will say it was not a lateral move though. Receiving ~$23/hour more as well as increased contributions to 403b and an annual MIP bonus. It has been challenging, but with the right company and leadership it has been great working with the unit to improve the culture from previous leadership.

No because they do not get overtime and they are not union

Do you like managing people and their personalities? I would much rather do direct patient care than making sure Nurse A doesn't clock in late and Nurse B stops bullying the CNA and Nurse C checks their email. Now if you have the opportunity to manage a high functioning and really cohesive group then that would probably be very rewarding. But I think those are the minority.

Only reasons for me would be more money and if I had my eye on a director position eventually and management experience would help you get there. You should be making more as a manager vs staff RN. If it’s an open manager position that they don’t want to pay more for and it open. There’s a reason people are leaving it and no one wants it.

No way!

No- so much stress!!

If you're planning to leave the company in a year for better pay, then the experience would be good. Otherwise, management is a headache and only good for the money. I wouldn't take it on. I've been there and have happily demoted myself for the same pay. 😁

I’m heavily considering and would love to transition from HR to Employment Law (employer side), however, that would require law school and I’m already in debt from getting my masters in HR. I’d like to get some insight on this though. Has anyone here ever made this type of transition or know of anyone who has? Was it worth it? Any regrets? Does it seem silly for me to do this having a masters without knowing if I’ll truly like it or not?

Thanks guys!

Hi! I have a quick question and could use some advice:

I have 1 job offer that is an hour away and pays 45k, after negotiations (Research Associate Position at a University) .

I have just interviewed for a position closer to home and a base salary of 65k, but haven’t heard back from them in about 2 days (He said he would make a decision by yesterday and I’ve reached out).
I have to decide on the first offer by Thursday but I haven’t heard back from the second yet. Thoughts on next move?

I can’t tell if I’m being paid enough but they are covering my health insurance premium, bar dues, CLEs, and AILA dues. Am I being paranoid?

I started at Amazon 6 months ago from consulting and I’m definitely performing under expectations. I don’t like the role since it’s too technical and I spend too much time coding. Every 1:1 with my manager is spent discussing my “progress” on projects, “training” I should be taking or “creating plans and lessons learned” to improve but I just don’t care. I am actively interviewing elsewhere anyways. Am I about to be put on a PIP?
