Would you pay $2300/month on rent if your take home pay is $7000? Don’t have any loans. I am single. I go out on weekend prolly spend $100 max. I live in Chicago. This place is really close to work. 10 min walk. I don’t like commuting by train/bus. I don’t have a car.

I like your strategy SC1, you must’ve saved a lot??!

like

Can you afford it? Yes. Are there cheaper options available? Yes. Should you pay that much on rent? Depends on your saving goal.

like

Update: pivoted to cheaper option.

like

Yes. Of the many things to spend money on, it’s worth it to be close to work and reduce commute time.

Hell no

Wait I just saw the take home part. So I’m guessing the pre-tax income is like $11k?

If so and you love it that’s not bad. Personally I would shoot for $1.8k-$2k because I’m saving aggressively, but your situation sounds fine.

There are some cheaper places in south loop, I lived in a 1br and walked to work for $1750 a month.

like

Max you should spend is $2,100 (30% of take home)

You can get away with more but it’s only hurting your ability to accumulate wealth.

7000 before or after tax?

Yes

Do you actually like the neighborhood your work is in though, cause if someone told me to live in downtown sf near the office, I would say hell no.

Then it’s a no brainer

Any strategies for trying to change a legal department culture that functions primarily by jumping from fire to fire? I started a new job a month ago and have been going through fertility treatments for a while. I’ve recently had a lot of doctor appointments back to back since I’m at the start of a cycle. At my last job I had let my manager know what I was going through since I knew her well, but this is someone new to me and not sure if I should say something? I almost feel like I’m hiding this big thing. I know I don’t need to say anything and that he can’t ask. Any thoughts or advice?

Any good financial strategy books for someone with high financial literacy?

I am interested in hearing opinions on using a ROTH IRA vs or with a ROTH 401k. I currently contribute to a regular pre-tax 401k and a ROTH 401k and am interested in the ROTH IRA. It seems very similar to a ROTH401k but includes a limit on contributions and excludes my employers matching (obviously). I feel as though it isn't worth using since I am already utilizing a beneficial post tax retirement plan.
