Put in your two weeks after. The taxes they take out on the PTO payout are quite hefty
Do it after. It will be the best vacation ever. Tell the team you're 100% checked out for vacation and won't be answering any emails.
Yeah but if I take the vacation im still getting payout in the form of the vacation plus two weeks of doing nothing
Not even a question. After
The taxes will be refunded with your return. Just reduce your with holding at your next job
I'm going on vacation and putting it in after. I wanted to give more notice but honestly, the more you give, the more risk you take on. Since you wouldn't be working over vacation anyway, there is no upside.
After and look up any policies your firm has on resignation. Some don't allow you to take vacation days after giving your notice
True I didn't think about the 8 or so hours you would be accruing
Unless you work for Grant Thornton who has FTO, you don't get paid anything when you quit 😒
Should all be driven by how important leaving on favorable terms is to you. I'm a big believer in going to extremes to leave on good terms because you never know how or when you might encounter the same people again. There's nothing inherently wrong with either approach, but it's a facts and circumstances thing.
^How is giving two weeks notice after vacation considered leaving on bad terms? You're still giving your 2 weeks notice. It's not like you're leaving on short notice. I don't understand why this would be considered leaving on bad terms.
Ideally you'd give as much as possible, but you could run into unreasonable people on longer timeframes - people piling bullshit work on because they know you won't hit their code, etc. Longer horizons at junior levels incentivize bad behavior, give them time to onboard the next person and no more.
You get a payout on what PTO you don't use
As I said, it's a facts and circumstances thing. Giving notice after taking vacation is not inherently wrong but if the nature of your responsibilities and workload is such that you have people scrambling with two weeks of transition there could be resentment. I agree with the previous post that - in general- giving as much notice as possible is generally best
