McKinsey & Company Would you rather be a Recruiter at McKinsey & Company or TikTok?

For the sake of this discussion, let’s say comp and other factors are the same

This is easy. Are you American? If so, McKinsey. However, if you support growing a Chinese based company that supports Russia, Iran, and North Korea then choose TikTok. American talent at TikTok is pretty much supporting the economic growth of China during a very sensitive time. It’s like the old adage. Show me your circle of friends and I’ll show you who you are. Blood money isn’t worth it AND if you didn’t know, there are two instances of TikTok that supports two different algorithms. There’s the for-China algorithm and the other. China’s algorithm supports and rewards STEM, education, and science posts while ours rewards dance moves and stupidity.

Which do you prefer to help grow? A company that wants the future of America to value idiocy or one that is a top three strategy & management consulting firm that helps American companies grow?

like

Support a chinese company any idea. We haven't had any bombings from china but guess where all american money goes???

This is a somewhat tough one...

I'd say McKinsey, as long as you are comfortable with the culture. You will have a better time hiring people at MBB than you would for TikTok/ByteDance in the hyper competitive tech space. Plus I think Mck has a more sustainable business.

Now with that said, if you are trying to break into tech and not getting traction with FAANGs and adjacent companies then TikTok would open more doors than working at Mck.

Name one company where recruiters are respected…just saying

likefunny

TA has a seat at the table and we are very much appreciated and respected. Our leadership knows what a tough world it is in recruiting these days and thanks us all the time! Come work with me as I have a couple of Sr/Recruiter opportunities!

Hi everyone, thank you so much for all of the advice. I’m moving forward with McKinsey’s offer!!

like

Congrats!!!!

like

McKinsey FSP role is very 3rd grade - you’re not respected enough within the Firm if you’re not CSP. With that being said, I’d rather be with McKinsey than TikTok because of their state ties.

like

All really great points SR1, thank you!!

Tiktok, because you won't have to deal with all the a$$holes in consulting, and you will get much more versatile skillset

Congratulations on having the option to go in either direction.

The truth is, without knowing where you are in your career, how much experience you have, previous firms you’ve worked for, and, what your long term goals are, it is tough for any of us to give you prescriptive advice.

There have been some good answers here and also general statements.

Questions to ask yourself:

1) Where do you want to be in the next 2-3 years?
—- I.e. (opportunity for growth)

2) How much impact do you want to have?
I.e. Tic Tok “TT” could provide more as it is less refined and well oiled vs MK

3) Exit opportunities, think varied vs narrow.
— Again without knowing your background, I am taking a stab and assuming that this may be your first foray into tech or professional services consulting.
— Exit opportunities coming from MK will be vastly superior to TT. Every C-Suit Executive, Senior Manager, Board of Director, and key decision maker knows who MK is and the value add that anyone who comes from that organization brings. TT’s brand alumni reputation is yet to be determined.

4) Compensation:
— TT might pay more now (I say that b/c tech companies have a track record of paying a premium but its for a reason (lots of work)), but again, think exit opps. MK will set you up for a longer run and if you play your hand right, you will more than make up what you sacrifice in the short.

5) The work you’ll be doing:
— Team size, support, resources, etc

6) Culture:
— Someone said something about consultants with bad attitudes or being snobby… As a former Consultant (BCG + Deloitte), yes, you will met individuals who really love themselves, but guess what, I’ve been in the tech space for a while too and they exist here too. I’ve met some of the most intellectually curious and smart people in consulting who would give you the shirt off their backs. I’ve also encountered similar individuals in Tech companies as well. In short, don’t put to much emphasis on others ppl experiences as it relates to culture. Yes, MK and TT will certain have overall different cultures, but there are great ppl and jerks at both.

7) Continuing education:
— Not sure what each firm offers on this but depending on what you’re looking to do in the future, it is worth knowing what the options are for partial and or full tuition reimbursement

I’ll stop there. There are other things to consider, but the above should hopefully be a good starting point of things to think through.

Best of luck in your decision.

Cheers!

TikTok for short term capital gains. McKinsey for long term career trajectory. McKinsey is probably more respected on your resume.

As an agency recruiter I hesitate to go internal and feel like joining a tech company (and one that is just having its moment in the spotlight) would be exhausting and repetitive but doing it for a consulting firm would be slightly more variety and with a highly reputable brand.

Any specific reasons why?

I can’t speak on McKinsey but I can tell you I interviewed with Tiktok and not one person in the entire panel even tried to sugarcoat the work life balance. It sounds like everyone works 24/7 basically, and they did not offer a remote option. While you don’t have to go in the office daily, you do have to be based near a Tiktok office.

I vote for McKinsey. It's more established and prestigious. I would think the training and career opportunities would be great there than at TikTok

Thank you for your insight!

Tech recurring 10 times out of 10!!! Do what you think is best, but tech recruiting I find respect, really cool people, a fun environment and a ton of growth opportunities.

McKinsey. Long term opportunities. Enough with the tech start ups. They are over hiring and will have to adjust in 12-18 months.

I’ve heard horrific things about the Tiktok recruiting work culture

like

From my colleague who worked there: “In a nutshell: It wasn’t bad on all teams. I had great relationships with other recruiting leads and heard good things about other team cultures. With my team, I will chalk it up to horrible leadership and there being a lot of extra pressure from Beijing since we were recruiting for product roles. My team did not prioritize candidate experience or diversity hiring, and made recruiting feel extremely transactional.. my lead did not push for work/life balance for employees (truly a cultural difference with China, however my manager was based in the US and should have pushed for it). She was also a micromanager, which my team did not need or appreciate. “

+ Develop the government, nonprofit, and private market segment of the products.
+ Dabble into some analytics cause I was a data scientist before I joined

My biggest mistake was accepting a promotion to manager, it made me realize that I'm not very good at managing people. Should I ask if I can go back to my old role?
