Would you rather have a comfortable WFH schedule working 40 hours, or travel every week for more money?

I hated WFH for an extended period of time. Boring. Not motivating. No interactions. No networking. Very little opportunity to learn or grow. No visibility

like

Ugh, I actually hate WFH. Having a short commute is most preferred for me

like

Quality memery Slalom. I know a Norweigian team that exclusively WFH. They seem to be in utter bliss. For them it‘s quality of life > money.

like

WFH since 2007 - yes 11 years and still love it - such a luxury to have the flexibility to chose when you want to commute and meet colleagues at coffee breaks or stay at home home and see your little ones instead ... disagree with the motivation point, have been in projects teams who worked together as one team with very committed and passionate individuals despite remote locations. I had up to 11 countries on my team and this was so enriching. I have also been working with some of the most senior global leaders and brightest minds in this company and this is definitely inspiring and motivating. This is certainly not less working hours in the week, I work a lot in evenings (and sometimes nights) when my children are in bed, but my flexibility during the day has no price. I wouldn’t trade this back to a front line travel position for anything, career track is slower indeed but two promotions in 11 years made it for me. Everyone has their own priorities, WFH is a key component of my work life balance.

like

I had the option of two positions when I joined that was just this. I selected the WFH option. And don’t kid yourself- WFH doesn’t always mean comfortable schedule. It just means you can sleep in closer to your appointment times and wear pj’s all day. Can be harder to turn off at night though. Benefit is no commuting delays beyond your control. No point benes/status and less money.

like

Definitely travel, have done both.

like

Been traveling nonstop for 3 years now. (I know most have done it for much longer). But would appreciate remote projects.

like

Omg WFH for sure. Been traveling 18 years and so done

like

Traveling 1 year. I like a little of both

like

A7, are you in a client facing role? And if so, how’d you score such an extended period of WFH.

like

A mix. I do 2 days on the road and 3 from home and it’s the perfect mix for me

like

I’ve been at home for 2 years (for 3 years was traveling to client) I have loved it. I even got a promotion out of it and have really built up my network. I am now going on the road for 3/4 days a week and not really looking forward to the travel/commuting. I wish I could have found another role where I could continue working from home full time. It was so great having that wfh flexible schedule with my young kids. Get offline earlier to do what I needed to do, put them to bed, continue working at night, take conference calls with APAC, go sleep, wake up and hop on a call, all without having to commute/travel while wearing comfy sweats

like

What if that’s not an option M1? The travel is via plane weekly

All great points.

My growth would for sure be slower in the WFH option. I know the project and it’s not something that would keep my up at nights, but 100% agree the motivation starts dying with that lifestyle

Uhhh, Sherlock - all of us are here because we already landed on one side of that trade off.

A7 that makes sense, especially if you have kids. I’m in a place where I am thinking if I’m gona travel in order to move up in my career, this is the time, before kids.

As far as motivation, I was referring to other things such as my decrease in physical activity and the gym! A personal struggle that I’ve yet to balance with WFH this last year. I would love to settle back down to that later on. I guess I’m afraid if I don’t make this move, it will take me much longer to move up in ranks/pay. But I also don’t want to completely let go of work life balance as that is very important to me.

Appreciate all the input!

I was contacted by an Amazon recruiter for a remote Sr. Program Manager role. I took and passed the assessment and was moved to the hiring manager round which was scheduled for tomorrow. I got an email tonight saying that the Director of the group decided that the person must be in Seattle. I am in Austin, which is not an option. I’m disappointed! The recruiter will let me know if any remote roles come up but in the mean time, does anyone have any remote Amazon roles that they’d refer me to?

I have an offer and want to negotiate

1. London base salary but I have to absorb all the expenses (train + stay)
I am thinking to negotiate to

2. home base salary and have my expenses paid for

I know that's depends on the amount I have to travel (and potentially stay) but at the moment this is unknown. Past 8 months was just twice a month + 2 nights stay.

The only thing I know is it won't be every week, the return trian ticket is about £80-100, depends I could plan ahead.

My school has seen combinations of f2f, hybrid, and remote teaching/learning throughout the first half of the school year. After the MLK holiday, our district is returning to traditional f2f teaching 100%. I have 4 band classes (1 beginning, 2 intermediate, & 1 advanced), and as far as content pacing is concerned, we’re 1 9-week grading period behind. Is it a far fetched goal to get my students where they need to be by the end of the school year? How would you handle a situation like this?
