would you rather stay home with parents to save money but have a 2 hour commute to work (1 way) or get an apt in ny & pay 1200 in rent

Coming from someone who is living with her parents currently, I’d rent in this situation. My commute is 30 minutes and I’m at a point where I’ll be able to buy in the next 12 months, so powering through is worth it.

30 minutes is wayyy less than 2 hours one way

As someone who currently lives with a parent and commutes an average of 1.5 hrs each way to clients per day, I would recommend renting if you're in a situation that can afford it. I would move out in a heartbeat if it wasn't just me and that parent at home, and if that parent didn't have health problems and could live alone long term. Long commutes quite literally drain your soul which makes the long hours of PA feel even worse than they already are, and can easily make you bitter toward work (because inevitably when teams that live 5 mins away from the client find out you live at home there's usually, in my experience at least, little sympathy for the fact that you drive so far because "you can always just move out")

Pay rent. 4hours a day = 20hours a week = that is like a month a year you are spending commuting, plus no freedom. It’s only money; money is meant to spent and life is meant to be enjoyed. Not commuting.

Rent....1200 isn't cheap but it isn't exactly expensive in the rental world

Where are you renting for 1200 in NY lol

No queens is way cheaper than Hoboken! JC you might be able to find something in that price range but commute will be a lot longer. At that price- Jump on it. Even on an associate salary, you can easily cover that and save.

Also, I think people who tell you they don’t mind a long commute, I think they must not like their family that much that they’d prefer spending time sitting in a car/train/bus over spending time with them.

@PwC5 I think you’re misinterpreting @M1’s comment. I think he is implying that if you give yourself a long commute to work then you’re spending less time with your family. But at the same time if you live away from your family then you spend less time with them too. So...lose/lose with that logic lol.

Who in the world would voluntarily commute four hours a day? Come on, you graduated college and made it to the real world, time to stop having your parents cut your steak into little tiny pieces. Good god man, four hours A DAY to save $1,200 bucks? Pretty ridiculous right?

$1200 for the city is incredible. 100% rent

I would only consider it if your parents house is the equivalent of a resort, complete with housekeeping and a chef (not named mom/dad) as you aren't going to have time to help around the house or even take care of yourself.

Depends on how much you’ve got to pay down in student loans, and how much your commuting cost is. A year of pain could change how long it takes you to buy your own place... though you will be insanely tired.

If you have over 20k in loans, commute. If less, enjoy the city. Especially at 1200 lol

Rent! That is a super cheap rate for rent actually. The time saved on commuting is so worth it. Think of all that extra sleep you can capitalize on!

I commuted 1 hour each way for a year and just got an apartment for 1900 where I walk 15 mins to work. It was an absolute game changer.

I did the 2 hour commuting for 6 months. I'd say do it if you need the $$, it was nice to recoup at home for a bit after school, etc. But I wouldn't do it longer than a year. 1 big thing: I took a bus / public transit. If you need to drive, no. That's grueling.

Hey guys. So I have been in financial due diligence (FDD) for some time now. Focus mainly in healthcare manufacturing and providers. I received a note from a recruiter about a business development & strategy position at a healthcare product manufacturer (surgical tools and such). I’m comfortable with a role like this on the M&A front, but I guess I’d be concerned on strategy formulation? I do think the skills in buy side FDD can translate well into a strategy role. What do you guys think?

By now, nearly every CEO of a major company has made some public statement or proclamation of their commitment to racial equality, diversity, and such matters. What percent of those do you believe truly comes from the heart and a bias for both personal and corporate action, versus a necessary public relations response with little personal ownership? My view: about 30%. That is still a great number, because it’s far higher than zero.
