I read this 5 times and still don't understand.
I don't know about you but 2016 was a motherfucker. I know a lot of people that went/ are still going through some epic shit. I think if your manager has any compassion at all they will understand and appreciate the context. Good luck. Sending hugs.
Counselor?
My guess is career counselor? I don't know anyone who has one in advertising but I have friends in accounting that do have a separate person from their boss managing their performance. So assuming this person's job is to help you navigate your career, it cannot hurt to let them know what challenges you're facing. In theory your personal life shouldn't spill too much into your job, but it happens and it can help them understand this is just a hard year vs thinking this is you trying your best.
Manager! Geez. Just trying to remain incognito folks.
Focus the convo less on reasons for your underperformance and more on why they will see increased performance this next cycle...
You would be surprised what I would wish on my nemesis. Are you expecting a bad review from your camp counselor? If so you could say you by no means want to ever make excuses but this year has been very difficult. If you kicked ass despite it all, perhaps a humble brag is in order? I had a tough year last year with a lot of stuff but never brought it up in my review because I didn't need to. If negative feedback came up as an obvious result from personal stuff then I may have.
Yes because once we had someone who didn't and it made them bow out even though we would have been supportive 100% of the way.
Counselor means something very specific and implies almost like a client/patient and therapist relationship based on confidentiality, that's why your post was confusing mixed with performance. Not knowing the nature of what happened and not knowing anything about your performance or manager, it's really hard to give advice that's meaningful. What does your gut tell you?? This is very personal.
Are you referring to Christian counselors? Only heard of this once in my life from a guy who talked about this openly as if anyone else non-religious understood.
Guidance counselor?
Only if it can legally protect you.
Camp counselor? Get them back at flag day!
keep it professional and direct the feedback towards the negative impact on the business. If its a 360 "anonymous" review, dont fall for it, t's not. Your manager's supervisor can figure out the feedback and who said what. Its not easy but maybe write it out and share it with someone you trust to get the tone right. If it's nuclear, go to HR.
So, obviously, we need to know what this person did to you.
