Would you stay if you’ve been re-org’d under a leader who doesn’t share information, blows you off, and doesn’t support your growth? How long do you need to stick it out so it doesn’t mar your resume?

My consulting partner changed and she ahem re-orged me out.

Industry or consulting? If consulting switch practice. If industry may have to switch groups or leave.

Sounds rough -this type of scenario can be a strong reason to move jobs. You should be thoughtful that it looks like you are finding other opportunities but the market is so hot right now it’s not a bad time to find “a job opportunity I couldn’t refuse.”

Sounds like an industry problem to me. Why do you think you need to stick it out? The market is extremely hot right now. You can start planning your exit.

re-orgs don’t reflect on your resume unless you are changing your title or description of responsibilities.

Leave whenever you feel comfortable with what is on your resume.

like

Came on here to say this. A re-org alone isn’t normally reflected at all on your resume (and doesn’t have to be). No obligation to stay for a certain amount of time.

This happened to me 2 years ago and the group still hasn’t meshed yet. Definitely on my way out as it seems I got lost in the shuffle and despite a bonkers sales year last year and networking with anyone who would accept an invite (don’t worry didn’t come off that desperate to my targets lol), no one is invested in me. The MD who put the most time in me left the firm, and after he left, I was realigned to someone I had asked not to have as my PML (prior difficulties with this person), and I’ve been a bit stuck ever since. It’s not them, it’s me I guess… time to break up. 🤷🏼‍♀️

At this point given the state of how quickly people change jobs, I would say start looking immediately for a new role. At worst you don’t find something that fits. Middling is if you find an ok role that has better management. Best is you find a role that helps you accelerate towards your future goals faster.

Don’t wait for someone else to change for you. Take control and get shit done.

For reference, my first job I had a great manager, then about 3/4 through the year I got a new one that was very meh. I always planned to stick around for 2 years and leverage that to get into a big 4 consulting firm. Year end cane around and I saw what the pay range was for my position and I was getting severely underpaid. I brought it up and how my contributions saved the company an additional $250k. New boss was a dick and said %5 raise was all I would get and to be happy about it because most people don’t even get 3%. Even if they gave me 10% I wouldn’t have been in the lowest part of the range. I was pissed, got my resume ready, sent it off, and had a job offer at a big 4 within 2 weeks. I got there a year ahead of schedule because I took initiative.

Moral: go after what you want and fuck the people who get in your way.

Your mental health matters - but what is hard to determine is if the next place will be better.

Depends on how often your company reorganizes. If there is a new structure every 18-24 months, just wait for the next reorganization and your leader will change. Your are a director and I assume close to the next level so you may not want to start over with team and relationship building at a new company. (I assume you are in consulting and not industry which is more stagnant).

Went through the similar situation, team changed 3 partners in 3 years, and went through merger. Senior people on the team who were my mentors/sponsors left one by one. My line managers were completely useless and uninterested in developing me and as someone junior I needed support. I gave it 9 months and then left 😊

like

I mean a reorg isn’t your fault ya know? If your new manager doesn’t click well with you then that’s a good reason to leave. I’m confused why you are worried about sticking it out and how that will look on your resume? Did you get a new role too and you want to stay in the role for a bit before switching?

You can leave whenever.

If you can’t re-org yourself somewhere else within the firm, and you truly think this is going to be a horrible experience, get out ASAP. Definitely the time to find something else

Nope, and it is a good talking point for why you want to leave. We’ve all been there or will be there at some point.

Everytime I work on the weekend I get into some sort of fight with my spouse. Anyone else get annoyed when their spouse constantly asks you when you’ll be done working, or asks how much longer you have to work. It annoys the hell out of me. I don’t want be working on a Sunday anymore than my spouse wants me to be working. But I have to. I don’t need reminded that I am disappointing my family in addition to working on the weekend. Am I alone in thinking this? Am I wrong to get so annoyed?
