Would you take a 20% paycut to work as business strategy and analytics analyst for a professional sports team in a HCOL area?

Depends on the sports team

like

Not if it’s the Pirates 😳 then again Pittsburgh isn’t HCOL…

No. If you like sports then watch sports or play sports. I know people who did this (eg went to work for the Warriors) and immediately regretted it

Any idea of your career progression from the new role? As in, If you get it, what’s the next leg up? Will the 20% cut alter your lifestyle or plans in any meaningful way? Will you enjoy your day to day work life enough with the new role that it makes up for the 20%? From my perspective, these are the questions you need answers to.

Just because you like a topic, doesn’t meet the actual work or work environment will be so awesome that it’s worth a paycut. Eg working in fashion / cosmetics - still major corporations with all the same headaches, issues and shitty work. Doesn’t make it fun because you like the topic

like

I don't know why you need to take a pay cut.

like

Everybody wants to do the job so they can go low on salary and still pull great talent

If I had a specific, narrowly defined career goal in sports team strategy, yes. If I'm just looking to exit consulting or just exit my firm, then no.

like

Which team? Or at least what sports/league?

MLS - no. NBA - yes. MLB - no. NFL - yes.

Fair, but might not be an option. European football has a pretty entrenched feeder system and my understanding is that it extends to the back office.

You might need to start at championship or 3rd tier club (or MLS).

America you don't have the visa issues and there is at least the chance you might ride the wave.

Probably depends on the current base pay and how I’m doing in terms of being able to cover all my expenses (e.g. going from $100k>$80k is a lot different than going from $500k>$400k)

Is this for the 49ers?

No

Hi everyone! How did you discuss with your boss all the time you’d be needing to take off for appointments? My boss absolutely hates when people take time off. Company policy is at least a week ahead of time - she says she needs at least 2. Also when someone requests off a couple days in March then a couple days in April for example, she gets annoyed and says they are requesting too much time (even if they have plenty of PTO available).

Ugh, just got rejected from a senior level big tech opportunity. 4 month hiring process, multiple rescheduled interview days and no-shows, 10+ interviews in the end, multiple take home assessments, and took 2 days off work for the final round of interviews. Very frustrating and feel like they wasted my time in the end. Just a shambolic interview process in which I felt like a placeholder till they found who they really wanted.

What’s the common etiquette for waiting for a recruiter to call you back? Recruiter called me yesterday & left voicemail to call her back. I called back less than 5 mins later and left a voicemail, but didn’t get a call back. Tried calling one more time at the end of the day but no answer. Still haven’t heard anything today. Should I keep waiting or try calling again or send an email? Don’t want to be too aggressive but also want to hear their update & hopefully schedule next round interview

After 3 years of dealing with the worst firm I've ever had the displeasure of working for, I finally landed my dream gig at a small specialty firm. The people at the new firm are all SMEs featured in and contributors to the most notable business publications in the world, less than 100 employees, better benefits, unlimimted PTO, doubled my pay and landed a senior role.

Keep looking for what you want and deserve. I'm happy to be forging a better path away from what I've had to endure.
