Would you take a 20k pay cut to move to a HCOL city for an in-house job you think you might really enjoy? Trying to figure out if it’s worth it. I love where I live now and would hate to leave, but I unexpectedly got this job offer and the new city seems really cool (and where I still have friends and connections) and I hate my current job.

Without a doubt, yes! Only 20k in the grand scheme of things isn’t terrible. The HCOL piece isn’t ideal, but I suspect you could make the finances work (or you likely wouldn’t be seriously entertaining this). Great job offer, new city where you have connections, PLUS you’re unhappy in hour current job — seems like a definite yes.

Thank you! Youre definitely making me feel better about the situation! As a litigation person in house jobs are so few and far between I almost feel like I should take it, even though I would be leaving a city I love. and also yes I hate my job right now😭

Ask yourself if you would regret not doing this 5 years from now…

That’s a great question! I definitely thought I was settled in my current city and saw a long term future here. However as a litigation person in house jobs have been few and far between and I wonder if I don’t take it, when will my next opportunity come along?

100% yes. Mental health is physical health. Take a job that won’t make you miserable (or as miserable).

Yeah it’s surprising what the per hour breakdown can be in bigger law firms

All depends... Can you afford the reduction? Are you going from 250-230k or 120-100k? It's all relative. If you can afford it and you'll be happy with the move (company and geography) than I'd strongly consider it

What city? That rent seems very low for a HOL city

What’s the difference after tax? I think that’s the important number for you to consider.

Once you’re in-house, in-house mobility is much easier, so returning to the city you love in 3-5 years is always a possibility if you ultimately decide the new geography isn’t where you want to be long term.

Thank you! I didn’t know/wasn’t sure about this so this is great to know.

Yes

As a random update, only ended up being a 10k pay cut and actually the total comp package exceeds salary! I’m so happy ☺️☺️☺️

Mask off: Journalist to freelance copywriter. Started working full-time under contract for an agency that won't hire me. I've freelanced for agencies and in-house marketing teams, but I'm always the outsider looking in. I want to transition to a full-time permanent gig. Interviews seem to go well, 2 agencies went to 3 interviews and nothing. I know I'm totally missing something that agency insiders would understand. Would love advice on navigating uncharted territory. Thank you!
