Would you take a $50k raise with a title bump at a competing firm or your dream job at a non-profit at your current salary?

Depends on how long I expect to be in that position (and potential growth opportunities). If I was in the early to mid stages of my career, I’d probably get that raise and title bump. But if title boost a title boost isn’t what I need and working the dream job would provide more internal satisfaction. I think a big chunk of the decisions comes down to your priorities and goals both in your personal and professional life. Are you at a point where you’re maximizing earnings? Or do you maybe want to keep your current pace and work in something you are passionate about? Different people have different answers to these questions, and none are wrong.

D4- sure, but it wouldn’t be that fulfilling and I kind of have been doing that for years. You can go back to my high school and college newspapers and find articles about me working on this cause. It is a very good suggestion though and frankly, how I have spent as much time in the private sector as I have

Take your dream job. You can literally chase money and pay bumps for the rest of your career. That will not make you happy. If you need some extra money to pay down loans it’s easy to bring in a few grand extra every month.

This is the challenge. You won’t be committed to your dream job- you will be committed to the side hustle to pay bills.

Lolol. Your DREAM or $50K. If your destiny is only worth $50K, pick new dreams.

Take the extra $50k/year, find ways to do the work of the nonprofit (board, fundraise, volunteer), then F.I.R.E., pay off those student loans, and go do that work as your second career!

50 k bro. Money talks.

Lol this is such a Deloitte answer.

I am in a similar situation except my “non-profit” is just my current job but at a client I’ve always wanted to work at, and I’m taking the 50k raise at a competitor

like

Non profit has not always been on my side. I worked at two non profits and it didn’t end well so then I jumped into Consulting and have been good since then. There are obviously risks wherever you go. So go where you’ll be comfortable and happy.

like

Additional info- we have $177k in student loans to pay off...still.

Why is this even a question if you're saying "dream" job. To me, a dream job is a once in a lifetime opportunity that very likely won't come around again if that is true in your case, take a hard look at your budget and goals and determine what will make you happiest. IMO, if you're already making $100k + (LCOL or MCOL), you make more than enough to focus on other things that make you happy. Once your financial necessities are taken care of and you have a tens of thousands of dollars of buffer to spend on luxuries and easily save, happiness from money is very incremental. I know $50k sounds like a lot, but what will that buy you that will make YOU happier than having a dream job? I'd rather work an extra decade then grind away at a job I don't care for. I'd rather suffer through economy on a 15 hour flight and stay at a comfortable, but not luxurious hotel, but know that when my vacation ends, I'm not dreading the 40 hour work week that week or the many thereafter. Remember, not only is work 40+ hours a week, it is also a permeating fixture in your life that greatly impacts aspects of your personal time. Ever been in a job that you hate? Like really, truly hate? The whole week, even the weekend starting from Friday night is miserable. I don't care if someone offered me $100k more a year, there is nothing I can spend that money on that would have made me happy. Heck there is nothing that I could have spent that money that would have even gotten me from okay to miserable. Knowing that extreme, I also recognize the diminished happiness from a job that is stressful and that I don't love. At the end of the day, you should do what maximizes YOUR happiness. Depending on how much you make now, earning potential, desired lifestyle, life goals, etc, money may or may not factor heavily into your "dream". And lastly, if you truly are debating this option, please step back from Fishbowl for additional advice. The perspective here is very skewed as evidenced by the advice on a variety of topics pertaining to money and finances.

Good one! Sitting here sipping some wine having deep thoughts and that made me chuckle, so thank you! :)

Dream job, no question. Most consulting -> non-profit moves would mean a pay *cut*, so keeping the same salary while getting to pursue your passion is the icing on the cake.

like

Dream job, easy. Not worth it even though I get paid 80k now, so 50k would be a 60%+ bump.

like

Yeah- we plan to have a kid in the next 2 yrs, have a ton of student loan debt and a mortgage

I'd take it to pay off those loans quicker.

like

I mean it depends on what level you are . Since I make about 500K a year, I would be happy to do non-profit at that comp.

In-House legal/talent recruiters completely ghosting during the interview process-- What gives? It's happened a disturbing number of times during my job hunt. They ghost after requesting an initial interview. They canceled an interview 10 minutes beforehand and then ghosted. They ghosted after saying I'd interview with the hiring manager. I get that the position was either filled or there were changed circumstances, but maybe some courtesy/professionalism toward the applicants? Be better.
