Would you take a job that pays you 25k more a year if you had to do an hour long commute both ways? Or the school that you can walk to for 25k less? And no, relocation is not an option. (For those who need more details, one salary is about $65k and the other is about $90k as a 5th year teacher.)

In Michigan the commute would unavoidably be on roads that are icy and/or snowy for a significant number of drives.
It wouldn't just be the time, it would literally be the risk.

likehelpfulsmart

I’m feeling similarly even though we don’t have snow. The drivers are crazy and the road I have to take to commute is a windy mountain road infamous for crashes. (And it actually did get snow for the first time in decades this year!)

like

I found an hour long drive a very good way to decompress in the afternoon (when I drove by myself..not so much with kids) I could blast music and be fully present by the time I got home.
on the way to work and hour drive isnt as much fun though

I guess it depends on if you like to drive and if it is an area that has a lot of traffic or if you are not on busy roads

No brainer! 90,000 and you can be yourself at home!

likefunny

I feel like that'd be a really great opportunity for you! I drive 40 minutes to my job and I've been doing so for years!

like

Might be worth it for a few years, but over time commuting takes a toll on your health. When I was commuting an hour each way a few years ago, I got severe sciatica from constantly being in my car. So just be prepared for legitimate health (and psychological) effects of traffic on your quality of life

likesmart

Agree, it’s okay short term. Once kids came though my time became too valuable and I could no longer tolerate an hour or more commute.

like

I commuted for many years an hour each way. It gave me think time. I’d do it in a heartbeat.

like

It depends on the drive. I drive 50 miles each way for 7 years and it did a seriously toll on me. It was necessary but I wouldn’t go back no matter what they paid me.
It also depends on the drive. Is it 15 miles (and hr in traffic) or 60 miles of steady traffic?

likesmarthelpful

I’d only do it if there wasn’t traffic or weather conditions if it was a 2 hour-per-day commute. Those two factors would drop in importance if it was only 1 hour per day. Everyone makes those microeconomic decisions differently. I will say that my 60 mile commute for 3 years put way too many miles on a new car. I had 100,000 miles on it in just a few years and I still had payments. Ugh!

like

I would take the $90K job if I could live close enough to drive to work.

like

I'm confused by your response. The original post stated that it would be a 1-hour commute each way and that relocating isn't an option.

like

Also consider that the increase in salary translates to higher retirement contribution. Could come in handy...

like

Yes and that additional money adds up with salary increases each year!

Is it in a different district? If so, it would affect your retirement and you might be stuck doing the commute for years whether you want to or not. After you pay a little more in taxes on the $25,000, the rest goes to time and wear and tear and gas.

like

Sorry, I’m thinking wrong, it’s the state that would be in charge of your years counted toward retirement. But will you be vested in your new district? Is there any risk of being let go?

like

Take the money. If you need to leave later and the new job says why did you leave? I left for the money.

like

Or left for the commute?

On a side note, it might depend on how close I was to retirement, the future steps and increases, etc.

I get a pension and it is based on my three highest years of pay. If I only had to make the commute for maybe three to five years but it not only increased my salary while teaching but what I was seeing in my pension? Then yeah, I might suck it up.

Similarly, I would look at the pay schedule for each district five years down the road. Right now you would be making $25,000 more. What would be the difference in five years?

like

I would now (I like my 25 minute commute and wouldn't mind the extra driving) but I would not have when my own children were younger. The little time you get with your kids is so precious.

like

I've lived where I could walk to work. The harassment thrown at me and my kids was not worth it.

like

Interesting perspective!

like

Nope. That drive is crazy. I did it for a year and never again.

likehelpful

My current salary plus $25K? I'm in.

like

It depends on the other factors that come along w it. Are the benefits the same? Is the actual work load more? Do they expect you to fulfill extra duties? Are the admin up your ass even more? How Mmuch are you going to spend in gas’s every year?

likehelpful

I would stay were I was if I liked it. Commuting is not worth any amount to me.

like

I would stay! By the time you consider price of gas and vehicle upkeep, along with exhausting yourself more, I'd say it isn't worth it!

like

I hate driving. 25 mins is the max. I commuted 20 mins. Now it takes me 2 mins to walk to school.

like

Oh - that might be TOO close. I would feel like I had to attend everything and like any and everything I did could always be seen by admin, coworkers, students, parents...

like

About $25 in gas per day. You probably make about $50 an hour so if your time is worth that, it’s another $100 per day. 180 work days times $125 per day is $22,500. If you don’t value your time, you are only out $4500 in gas money. At this time in my life, I value my time too much to take that gig.

Non FAANG tech (think salesforce, PayPal, Sqaure, etc.) proposed compensation for 2nd yr MBB EM - ~200 base, 40 bonus, 100k stock vesting over 4 years, sign on bonus 25. How would you rate this? Worth consideration?

In TC calculations, would you count 100K stocks or only 25 that vest in y1?

I feel a little crazy saying this, but more money at this point doesn’t resonate. I see a ton of exit planning and boomerang threads here, but I’d take a 50% pay cut (or a 50% raise) for an exciting role. That’s totally privilege talking, but I just can’t imagine chasing extra money in PE or lateraling just for the money. No virtue signaling here at all. I actually worry on some level that I’m somehow a moron for not giving a thought to maximizing earnings.

When is bonus being paid out in December?

Hello sharks,

Recently attended the TCS interview for the role of cloud architect and it went well.

HR asked me to upload all the documents and verified.
Then HR called me to discuss the salary and told me that she will inform the management.

Almost 3 working days after the call, haven't received any updates! Tried to call HR but not picking up the call. I assume it's because of these continuous holidays.

Is this usual!

Please let me know your thoughts and suggestions.

Hey all, first time poster here and still consider myself fairly new to consulting so please be kind. Questions for past/ current Accenture folks: I noticed in some threads that SC level only applies to strategy consulting. Could Product Manager be SC level if I have my MBA or is it not even considered a Strategy role? And do they only consider you an “MBA hire” if it’s top tier MBA? Lastly, I’ve seen quite a big salary range for MBA hires. Anyone care to share the latest? TIA.

I quit. I was respectful. Thankfully, every person I have told has been so nice, and I wasn't immediately bounced out by my leadership (which has happened), but I have been surprised by my own bittersweet tears. If they actually cared, why didn't they say so sooner? I gave so much, and I was consumed by this organization. I invested in them, but my investment and dedication were not reciprocated, which is why I ever even entertained leaving. I don't know why it hurts, but it really, really does.
